About MCE and the TLS Department

MCE is a leader in innovative and effective approaches to promote learning throughout the lifespan through the improvement of education, mental health, and information services and systems. Home to nearly 70 faculty, 50 staff, and 1,000 domestic and international graduate students, the College provides 20 graduate-level degree and certificate options across 10 programs with in-person, online, and hybrid learning options. Our excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service also is reflected in the affiliated and collaborative work of our research centers: the Marsico Institute of Early Learning, the Center for Rural School Health & Education (CRSHE), and the Positive Early Learning Experiences (PELE) Center. Additionally, the College includes two schools: the Fisher Early Learning Center and the Ricks Center for Gifted Children.

There are ample opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary scholarship with colleagues who reside in one of the five MCE departments: Counseling Psychology, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Higher Education, Research Methods and Information Science, and Teaching and Learning Sciences (TLS), where the School Psychology program resides. Collaboratively, the Counseling Psychology and School Psychology programs share a clinic space, providing counseling and educational services to the community at large.

The major program areas represented in the TLS department are School Psychology, Teacher Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Early Childhood Special Education, Gifted Education, and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, with degrees offered at the masters, educational specialist, and doctoral levels along with certificates, specializations, and concentrations. The Department is strongly committed to building a diverse and inclusive educational environment, which is in full accord with the value that DU places on its commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. Candidates must demonstrate ability to integrate content and issues relating to, and to work effectively with diverse populations.

About the SP Program

The SP program currently serves a diverse community of graduate students who are enrolled full-time in either a masters (MA), an educational specialist (EdS), or a doctoral (PhD) program. The EdS and the PhD programs are accredited by the National Association of School Psychology (NASP) and the PhD program is also accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The program is fully aligned with the mission of DU and MCE to train highly ethical, capable, and equity focused leaders who employ innovative and effective approaches to advance lifelong learning, development, and wellness within a rapidly changing, global society. Our program philosophy is built upon an ecological, scientist-practitioner training model emphasizing the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and sensitivity to diverse human experiences and cultures. We seek to graduate professionals who are competent consumers, collaborators, interventionists, and advocates for prevention and empirically valid practice as they work on behalf of students, families, schools, and communities. Students complete integrated coursework and supervised experiences at our on-campus clinic and during fieldwork at local and national school districts and clinical and community agencies. Our graduates leave with an appreciation of the interrelationship between environmental, neurobiological, and cultural influences on education and mental health and with strong skills in general and special education, supportive intervention, collaborative problem-solving, and the promotion of family involvement in development and education. Our alums work as professors, researchers, school psychologists, consultants, and government officials.
