Reporting to the ASVP of Enterprise Data and Solutions of Information Technology, the Director of Business Intelligence leads the newly-formed Business Intelligence team, overseeing the planning and execution of BI and data projects and operations, and coordinating team activities in support of IT and the college’s missions, strategic goals and initiatives. This role will be responsible for the creation and delivery of the business intelligence strategy, shaping the future of the college’s IT ecosystem. This includes data model and engineering solutions in the form of business dashboards, reports, and other data visualization to answer business questions or to respond to core institutional issues and decision support. The position will lead multi-year BI program initiatives working with the project team and data consumers, designing, developing, testing and training the users of BI products, including Tableau dashboards and other data analytics solutions.

Hands-on dashboard development experience using industry leading BI tools, such as Tableau with solid data analysis and data architecture skills are essential. The director should be a faster learner and able to apply new and emerging technologies to the existing BI product portfolio to achieve meaningful business outcomes through applying complex data analysis, data science and the data modeling techniques, from descriptive and diagnostic analytics to more advanced predictive modeling.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Lead the strategic planning process for business intelligence initiatives, recommend new technologies, methods, and industry-leading best practices. This includes the design and maintenance of a system to warehouse data and information, including structured and unstructured data sets.

  • Scale Argos and Tableau platforms through building advanced dashboards, incorporating new data sources, user training, and storytelling to promote department engagement.

  • Institute a data governance program that focuses on procedures, standards, data policies, and a culture of trustworthiness of data in decision making. Provide guidance and policies on ethical issues such as determining what data and information can be shared for what purposes. Conduct data literacy training and coach the user community how information is collected, connected and distributed.

  • Partner with academic units and business departments such as Institutional Research, Enrollment Management, Registrar, Finance, HR, Financial Aid and Institutional Advancement to define and execute potential BI initiatives. Analyze data needs, gather report or dashboard requirements, perform data mapping including multiple internal data sources and/or the use of public data, to implement BI solutions to solve business issues. This often involves conducting complex root cause analysis to troubleshoot data discrepancies, work with end users to correct business processes, and systematically cleanse large data sets.

  • Identify business relevant performance metrics and KPIs with area leaders. Apply innovative visualization techniques to develop interactive dashboards and advanced analytics to analyze and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets to create new business value and opportunities.

  • Excellent knowledge of data query and data analysis, strong business insights, dashboard and data science skills are essential. Hands-on dashboard development experience and data modeling using industry leading BI tools, such as Tableau, Argos, Redshift with solid data architecture skills.

  • Effectively work and collaborate with PMO to lead, manage and provide technical directions on BI projects, and ensure projects are executed to successful completion.

  • Manage tables and data views within SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Oracle databases, along with corresponding ETL and data pipelines. Keep current on the latest technologies, test new concepts, and explore proof-of-concept prototypes to advance the BI program.

  • Commit to professional development by fostering a climate of team learning, cross-training and knowledge pool building.

  • Strong SQL, data model, excel, and visualization skills such as Tableau and Argos.

  • Excellent visual skills, including demonstrable design knowledge, such as layout, typography, color, and interaction design.

  • Working experience on data modeling and data integration using databases like SQL server, Oracle or ETL tools.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with users and collaborate well within a team environment to drive results.

  • Good written and oral communication skills and comfortable in delivering ideas and initiatives effectively for different audiences.

  • Excellent presentation and storyboarding skills.

  • Capable of working on problems of diverse scope, and resourceful in developing solutions encompassing challenges to deliver solutions before the deadlines.

  • Following standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data to obtain trustful results.

  • Demonstrated organizational, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively.

  • Experienced with data process mapping, business analysis, criteria and data flow documentation in written or visual format.

  • Ability to apply Data Science skills with large datasets to get insights, derive patterns or answer complex data questions.

  • Experience working with data model or data warehouse, and knowledge of working with unstructured data.

  • Keen to keep updated on the latest technologies with technology training and professional development.

  • Actively participate in organization level activities and events related to learning, training, special projects etc.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business or a similar degree, combined work experience and education as equivalent.

  • 15 years of experience as data visualization analyst, business intelligence analyst, data warehouse/data model architect along with report development experience.

  • 5+ years of Tableau Dashboard development experience.

  • Experience in managing data warehouse, data store, and data model (e.g. dimensional modeling).

  • Strong SQL query and Oracle relational database and Oracle Development skills.

  • Strong Excel skills and efficiency in using visual tools.

  • Ability to optimize performance of dashboards and data sources.

  • Ability to extract diverse datasets, data mapping, and ETL data transformation.

  • Experience working with data stewards, data governance, and data standards.

  • Knowledge of SDLC and project management best practices.

  • Higher Education experience preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Java, Groovy/Grail experience.

  • Familiar with campus ID card or space/room scheduling system.

  • ERP cloud migration experience.

COMPENSATION

The hiring salary range for this position is $121,571 - $155,003 commensurate with years of relevant experience.

Grade of Position: 23-14E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25
