Job Description

The Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies. This is a full-time, nine-month position at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin on September 1, 2023. Responsibilities include: conducting university vocal ensembles, including Chamber Choir, the department’s premiere choral ensemble, teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting, advising undergraduate and graduate students, assisting with Voice Area recruiting efforts, and departmental service. Recruiting activities may include visiting secondary schools, offering workshops, masterclasses, and adjudicating. The candidate must be willing and available to fulfill these responsibilities during the regular work week and on weekends, as needed.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have earned a DMA or PhD in choral conducting by time of appointment. The candidate will be expected to maintain national and regional visibility in creative and scholarly activity as a conductor/pedagogue, possess artistic insight and discerning musicianship, and demonstrate a commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment. Special consideration will be given to candidates who demonstrate a proven record of collegiate teaching excellence and effective recruiting. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with faculty to promote the fine reputation of the UMass choral program throughout the region and nation.
