Adjunct Teaching Position

The Mathematics Department routinely hires adjunct faculty to fill curricular needs on a part-time basis and maintains a pool of candidates for temporary part-time positions as the need arises. This position is continuously open and qualified persons will be selected to teach face-to-face undergraduate courses (including Developmental Math, College Algebra, Math for Business, Math for Education, Precalculus, and Quantitative Reasoning) as the need arises. Appointments are generally made on a semester-by-semester basis. Positions are renewable, contingent upon need and performance.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Mathematics is required. An advanced degree in mathematics education or a related field will be considered iff the application clearly documents at least 18 graduate credit hours in graduate-level mathematics courses. This requirement may be waived for adjuncts teaching only
  • Developmental Math.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in classroom teaching.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Facility in online communication via email, learning management systems, and online homework platforms.
  • Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching face-to-face sections of College Algebra, Math for Business, Math for Education, Precalculus, Quantitative Reasoning, and/or Developmental Math on campus in Austin, TX. This entails following a common syllabus, utilizing online homework (WebAssign, MyMathLab, or ALEKS) and learning management systems (Canvas), holding at least one on-campus office hour per week per section, and keeping in contact with the course coordinator, primarily by email, for common assignments and exams. Class size is generally 24-30 students; compensation is $3888 (current as of Fall 2019) per 3-credit course section.

Applicants that do not have a Masters or Ph.D. in Mathematics must highlight 18 graduate credit hours in a graduate-level mathematics course on the graduate transcript, or indicate that they are only applying to teach Developmental Math.
