Position overview
Anticipated start: July 1, 2023 Application Window

Position description

The University of California, Berkeley invites applications for approved teaching-track positions in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the Assistant and Associate/Full Teaching Professor levels. Rank will be determined based on qualifications and experience. There are two positions available, one at the Assistant Teaching Professor level in EECS - Division of Computer Science and one open-rank position initially in Computer Science that is expected to transfer to the forthcoming Department of Data Science. The positions are formally titled Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE), Lecturer with Security of Employment (LSOE), and Senior Lecturer with Security of Employment (Sr. LSOE).

In parallel with the formation of the new College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS), the creation of a new Department of Data Science (DoDS) is also under consideration. This innovative department would serve to advance the frontiers of data science by recruiting outstanding and diverse faculty working at the interfaces of computing, statistics, and domain applications and by fostering cross-campus collaborative interactions. We envision world-class leaders in the foundations, applications, and implications of data science co-located in a common transdisciplinary academic unit that would facilitate cross-fertilization between these fields, so that the latest computational and statistical methods are brought to bear soundly and rigorously to address timely and high-impact societal questions. As one of Berkeley's newest academic departments, DoDS would embed diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) into its foundation. It would recruit a diverse and inclusive faculty that would cultivate an open pedagogical environment to train the next generation of data scientists, with both first-rate computational and statistical foundations and a deep understanding of the applications and ethical implications of data and algorithms.

Teaching-track faculty are educational professionals who combine instructional excellence with professional and/or scholarly achievement and activity, including creative activity, especially as they relate to instruction and pedagogy. We seek candidates who have demonstrated that they are promising or established computer science and/or data science educators and who are interested in a teaching-focused career. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching large courses---particularly courses with 200+ students---and managing large course staffs.

Preference will also be given to applicants whose teaching or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit: http://ofew.berkeley.edu/new-faculty.

Financial and in-kind resources are available to pursue activities that help accelerate our efforts to achieve our equity and inclusion goals, with the full backing of the College. Examples of ongoing programming at the College are available at: https://engineering.berkeley.edu/about/equity-and-inclusion/. Details of the department's programs and resources dedicated to ensuring a welcoming, fair and inclusive environment can be found at: https://eecs.berkeley.edu/about/diversity

All applications must be complete by 11:59pm on the final date. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Applications are “complete” when all required materials are uploaded and letters of reference have been requested through the system, even if the reference letters have not arrived.
