Position Summary:

The Department of Psychology & Neuroscience in the College of Arts and Sciences at North Central College seeks candidates for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 1, 2023. Appointment may be offered with tenure for qualified candidates. We are particularly interested in candidates in Social Psychology or a related field, especially if it involves DEI-related scholarship. Additional teaching opportunities are available in the College’s interdisciplinary general education program and other interdisciplinary programs, including Global Studies, East Asian Studies, Gender & Sexuality Studies, and our new minor in Race and Ethnic Studies. There may also be teaching opportunities in the College’s emerging health science programs. North Central College offers a competitive compensation and benefits package; the contract is for 9.5 months with a 3-2 teaching load. Applicants must have a doctorate and demonstrate excellence in teaching, mentoring of students, and ongoing scholarship; scholarship that provides research opportunities for undergraduates will be considered favorably.

The Department of Psychology & Neuroscience is housed in the College’s new Science Center (built in 2017). Located in Naperville, IL, just 28 miles west of Chicago, the College is within walking distance of the Metra station, which offers easy access to the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Chicago and nearby communities. The Naperville area is home to many excellent school districts, and Naperville has been ranked as one of the best places to live by Money magazine. For more information, please visit: http://www.noctrl.edu. North Central College is an EEO Employer.

Founded in 1861, North Central College is a selective, comprehensive liberal arts institution of about 3000 students (2400 undergraduates and 600 graduate students). Nearly 40% of our students are first-generation college students, and our Cardinal First program has been nationally recognized for its role in helping them succeed in college. Approximately 30% of our undergraduate and 20% of our graduate students self-identify as members of minoritized groups. There are more than 130 international students from 45 countries. The department is one of the largest on campus in terms of the number of full-time faculty (11), numbers of majors (17% of the college), and credits generated (10%); the demographics of our majors are similar to those of the College. The department is known for its collaborative, supportive environment for both students and faculty.

North Central College values diversity, equity and inclusion and strongly encourages candidates who would enrich the diversity of the campus community to apply. Experience working with diverse student populations and communities is highly desirable.

In 2019, to address its strategic imperative of Diversity, Inclusion, and Global Engagement, the College established an ongoing task force that recently shared its initial findings about campus climate and recommendations with the campus community. In 2020, the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience also conducted the first part of its own climate study. Among the needs we identified are: (1) enriching the department and college communities with diverse perspectives, and (2) providing role models and support for students from minoritized groups. We are seeking candidates who share our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and will partner with us as we advance our efforts in this area.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three professional references in an electronic format to https://www.northcentralcollege.edu/academic-affairs/prospective-and-incoming-faculty. For further information, please email Dr. Mary Jean Lynch, Chair, Department and Search Committee, at mlynch@noctrl.edu.
