Overall Description of Responsibility or Nature of Work

The Bio-inspired Pulmonary Engineering Lab in the Departments of Bioengineering and Medicine seeks a talented, passionate, and industrious experimentalist to join our team as a fulltime Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus.

Research in the Bio-inspired Pulmonary Engineering Lab (https://maginlab.com/) focuses on developing biomaterial-based cell culture platforms that mimic the complex structure, mechanics, and composition of lung tissues and blood vessels. We design and synthesize dynamic biomaterials and use them to build cell culture systems with biomanufacturing techniques such as 3D-bioprinting. These platforms enable us to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying chronic pulmonary diseases, including pulmonary fibrosis and hypertension, and provide a foundation for the development of precision medical treatments (https://doi.org/10.1152/ajplung.00353.2018). We work in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team that includes basic scientists, engineers, and clinicians. Our laboratory pursues high-risk research that will transform the way we diagnose and treat chronic pulmonary diseases.
Specific Position Duties
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate to work on projects at the interface of bioengineering and pulmonary medicine. More specifically, the candidate will design and synthesize novel hydrogel biomaterials with the goal of building cell culture platforms to study chronic pulmonary diseases in vitro. Responsibilities include design and execution of projects that use organic polymer synthesis techniques to create and characterize phototunable biomaterial components. Expertise in organic chemistry, biomaterial design, polymer synthesis, as well as characterization methods such as NMR and rheology are required. Familiarity with cell culture, tissue engineering, and evaluation of cellular and molecular changes in response to dynamic 3D hydrogel-based cell culture platforms is preferred. The candidate will develop research protocols, carry out experiments, collect, analyze, and interpret data, and have the responsibility to communicate progress and results clearly and effectively both within the laboratory and through presentations and publications.

This position provides interdisciplinary training in a research environment that connects bioengineering research ideas and prototypes with the medical doctors who implement these tools clinically. The ability to communicate across disciplines is essential. The successful applicant is highly motivated, driven and collaborative, and has demonstrated the ability to independently complete research projects. The applicant will begin by working on projects in the laboratory that are currently funded and then can transition to pursuing grant funding for their own creative solutions to challenges in pulmonary medicine. This position will provide in-depth training in technical skills including using biomaterials for cell culture, 3D biofabrication, and evaluation of cell-matrix interactions as well as project management, grant writing, and leadership. Dr. Magin is uniquely positioned with experience and professional networks in both industry and academia to provide the training and connections to support diverse career goals.

Special Conditions of Employment
  • This position may require occasional extended hours and/or time outside normal working hours.

Salary & Benefits
