GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent in this position will supervise and assist in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, parking lots, walkways and grounds. Supervise campus services such as moving and/or erecting furniture and equipment, waste and trash removal and performs related tasks as required. Maintains records of work progress, materials and equipment used, etc.

Follows the University's best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED (Name and title of person from whom incumbent receives direction)

Works under the direct supervision of the Head of Grounds, who inspects the performance for compliance with departmental policy and standards

DIRECT REPORTING STAFF

May exercise direct supervision over 1-5 personnel and functional supervision (i.e. over certain but not all work activities or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over employees of a lower grade

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans and lays out work schedules of subordinates
  • Supervises and assists in cutting grass
  • Supervises and assists in fertilization program
  • Supervises and assists in removing snow
  • Supervises and assists in removing trash
  • Supervises and assists in lining athletic fields
  • Supervises and assists in preparing athletic fields for daily use
  • Supervises and assists in assembling and repairing outdoor athletic equipment
  • Locks and unlocks athletic facilities
  • Requisitions lawn maintenance supplies
  • Requisitions field maintenance supplies
  • Makes general repairs to equipment
  • Trains employees
  • Schedules overtime

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledge, skills, abilities)

  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in building maintenance and repair work
  • Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in building maintenance and repair work
  • Knowledge of the standard preventive maintenance procedures followed in connection with building structures
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools such as pliers, chisels, hammers, etc.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of hand-held power tools such as drills
  • Skill in using small hand tools such as pliers, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
  • Skill in using hand-held power tools such as drills
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates’ training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

Applicant must have (A) five years of full time or equivalent part-time experience in greenkeeping, landscaping, groundskeeping, or park maintenance of which (B) at least three years must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions from the Massachusetts State Classification Specifications

LICENSE AND/OF CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Current hoisting license and license to apply fertilizer and pesticides
  • Incumbent must either possess the required licenses or acquire them within one year of employment
  • In addition, possession of a current Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License is desirable

  • Knowledge of techniques followed in weed control
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of pesticides
  • Knowledge of the procedures followed in pruning and cutting trees
  • Skill in the use of hand-held power tools such as drills, chain saws, hedge trimmers in a workman like manner and safe manner
  • Skill in the use of a variety of motorized equipment, such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, forklifts, dollies, rototillers etc.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise, understandable manner
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing assigned work objectives
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates’ training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively, determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action

  • Ability and willingness to interact diplomatically with building occupants
  • Ability and willingness to represent the Facilities Department to clients and respond to clients' concerns in a timely and supportive manner
  • Basic knowledge of fire safety constraints and other safety issues relating to responsibility area
