General Description / Primary Purpose:

The Department of Biology within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Florida (UNF) invites applications for a state-funded, Biomedical Sciences Program Director and Associate Professor with tenure position in Biology. UNF is a Carnegie Community Engaged Institution located in Jacksonville, Florida and is home to six colleges and over 17,000 students. The Department of Biology at UNF has two main pillars of research focus, including an established Coastal and Marine Biology program and a growing Biomedical Sciences program. The Biomedical Sciences Program Director will be expected to lead the University-wide Biomedical Sciences Program and to develop relationships and opportunities between UNF and biomedical and biotechnology industries and graduate programs. The ideal candidate will be an established researcher with a track record of funding and an established research program of exceptional caliber grounded in the biomedical sciences. Teaching responsibilities may include a range of courses including introductory level courses for majors, upper-level courses in the biomedical sciences program areas of emphasis, and courses in the candidate’s area of specialty.

The Biomedical Sciences Program Director will be expected to lead the University-wide Biomedical Sciences Program and to develop relationships and opportunities between UNF and biomedical and biotechnology industries and graduate programs. The ideal candidate will be an established researcher with a track record of funding and an established research program of exceptional caliber grounded in the biomedical sciences. Teaching responsibilities may include a range of courses including introductory level courses for majors, upper-level courses in the biomedical sciences program areas of emphasis, and courses in the candidate’s area of specialty. A competitive salary, Director stipend, and startup package will be provided.

Faculty Position Required Qualifications:

Director Required Qualifications:· An effective leader who will embrace the challenge of strengthening and growing a nascent Biomedical Sciences Program.· Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate program goals and objectives in order to facilitate a welcoming and attractive hub for biomedical activity and investment.· Able to build strong ties as well as research and career development opportunities with other academic and/or biomedical research institutions and the biotechnology industry throughout the North Florida region.· A record of research in the biomedical sciences and a demonstrated ability to secure external funding with experience in developing and writing extramural grants.· Able to establish good working relations with faculty, staff, students, and administrators and serve as a key liaison with business and government partners and other community constituencies.
Associate Professor Required Qualifications:· Doctoral Degree (Ph.D., M.D., M.D./PhD or equivalent) in a biomedically focused field.· Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses in biology.· Ability to teach courses within the Department of Biology curriculum.· Strong commitment to mentoring and supervising undergraduate and graduate research students.· Excellence in scholarship demonstrated by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with an appointment at the Associate Professor level.· Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining an independent research program.· Record of seeking extramural research support evidenced by proposal submission and/or receipt of funding.
