Applications are invited for a tenure-track, academic-year Assistant Professor position in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences at the University of Rhode Island to begin Fall 2023. We are seeking to attract a diverse pool of job applicants for this position. The department has 16 research faculty members, 9 teaching faculty members, and 16 graduate teaching assistants. We offer programs leading to BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees with applied math options at all levels and co-govern the Data Science Program, which houses a BA, BS, online graduate certificate, and online Master’s degree. The interdisciplinary nature of our department will provide the new faculty member with opportunities to interact with a broad range of colleagues in areas such as, Oceanography, Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Biology, and Business.

The research activities of the faculty in our department are mainly concentrated in the areas of combinatorics and graph theory, complex dynamical systems, computational mathematics, data science, difference equations, financial mathematics, mathematical biology and modeling, numerical analysis, numerical linear algebra, applied probability/statistics, partial differential equations, scientific computing, and applied analysis. Data Science is an area of tremendous growth for the department and the College of Arts and Sciences. University wide, investments have been made in hiring faculty who do research in data science or data-enabled science and in the research computing (data, high-performance computing, machine learning) facilities and support personnel to enhance their opportunities for success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include: teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses, in line with departmental needs; publishing original research in peer-reviewed academic journals; developing extramural grants and obtaining funding to support independent and interdisciplinary research projects; advising undergraduate and graduate students; and engaging in departmental, college, and university service.

The successful candidate will typically teach two courses per semester with possible reduced teaching loads in the first two years and when bought out by an externally funded research grant or administrative work. Teaching assignments will be in subjects related to the mathematical underpinnings of data science. The candidate will also be expected to conduct mathematical research in data science and may include collaborative research with faculty from other disciplines in the context of projects related to data science and big data modeling and analysis.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

1. Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or closely related area in mathematical sciences by time of appointment August 2023.

2. Research interests in mathematical and computational aspects of Data Science, which may include Machine/Deep Learning or Neural Networks.

3. Demonstrated ongoing research program and sustained record of publications, commensurate with academic experience.

4. Demonstrated ability to become an effective teacher of mathematics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

5. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.

6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

7. Demonstrated ability to contribute to our graduate research program and supervise M.S. and Ph.D. students.

8. Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching and scholarship.

9. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Desired:

1. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines.

2. Postdoc or other relevant industry experience.

3. Demonstrated ability to secure external funding.
