Dean, College of Health Professions and Human Services

Kean University seeks a talented academic leader to serve as the founding Dean of the newly established College of Health Professions and Human Services (CHPHS). CHPHS gathers together all of the University’s programs at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels leading to careers in clinical practice, including Nursing, Physician Assistant Studies, Genetic Counseling, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Public Health, Exercise Science, Recreation Administration, Recreational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Athletic Training, Clinical Psychology, Counselor Education, and Social Work. All of these programs had previously been available at Kean but had been dispersed over three Colleges. The new College brings them all together for the first time, improving the collective visibility of all programs and improving opportunities for collaborative work across closely related fields.

Reporting directly to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the primary academic leader and chief administrative officer of the College. The Dean is responsible for charting CHPHS’s strategic vision, hiring and retaining faculty, ensuring the quality of academic programs, improving research productivity among the faculty, maintaining and when necessary acquiring professional accreditation for academic programs, and developing new academic programs as opportunities arise. The Dean also participates in fundraising for the College.

Kean has been designated as New Jersey’s first and to date only Urban Research University. Long dedicated to providing an accessible and affordable education at high levels of quality, Kean has significantly expanded its commitment to research, hiring more than 100 new tenure-track faculty in the last two years. Kean is one of the most diverse institutions in the country and values inclusion as a core commitment.

The founding Dean will have a unique opportunity and obligation to introduce this new College to all of the constituencies it serves, making strong communication skills a critical consideration. We seek a strong collaborator with the ability to build programs from within and catalyze relationships with the other five Colleges of the University (the College of Liberal Arts; the College of Education; the College of Business and Public Management; the Hennings College of Science, Mathematics and Technology; and the Michael Graves College of Architecture and Design). We seek:

  • A leader conversant with clinical practice in a variety of institutional settings.

  • An innovator with a record of building challenging, engaging curricula.

  • An inspired communicator.

  • An entrepreneurial mindset.

  • A commitment to equity and inclusion.

  • A particular sensitivity to the needs of urban communities.

  • A person who embodies and supports the highest standards of ethical leadership.

Qualifications: Completion of a terminal degree in a field related to the disciplines within the college and a minimum of five years of experience leading an academic program preparing graduates for clinical practice is required. Strong communication skills are essential.

Candidacy review begins immediately and continues until appointment is made. Please submit your cover letter, resume/CV and contact information for three professional references. Official transcripts are required prior to the starting date of employment.

As a condition of employment, external candidates are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination prior to their start date.
