Organizational Unit Overview:

The Community and Regional Planning Program (https://planning.ecu.edu/) is housed within the Department of Geography, Planning and Environment, one of sixteen departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (https://thcas.ecu.edu/). The Program maintains a PAB-accredited B.S. degree and has recently launched a fully online Master’s degree. The Department of Geography, Planning and Environment (https://geography.ecu.edu/) is a diverse, research-active, and collegial unit that offers four undergraduate B.S. degrees (Geography, Applied Atmospheric Science, Geographic Information Science and Technology, and Community and Regional Planning) as well as two M.S. degrees (Geography, and Planning and Development). The department is home to the ECU Center for Geographic Information Science and has a strong focus on interdisciplinary research and community-engaged scholarship.

Job Duties :

The Community and Regional Planning Program at East Carolina University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, focused on transportation planning, economic development, and/or rural revitalization, to begin August 2023.

The successful applicant will be someone who can thrive in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment and who can contribute to the Program’s mission to promote regional economic transformation and serve eastern North Carolina’s diverse populations through teaching, research, and engagement. The Planning Program is committed to fostering diversity among ECU faculty, students, and the Planning profession. The successful candidate will teach face-to-face and distance learning courses in their area of expertise and contribute to the core curricula in the on campus B.S. in Community and Regional Planning and the online M.S. in Planning and Development. They will be expected to develop a strong publication record, secure extramural funding in support of research and teaching, and contribute to our culture of student success through active mentoring and advising. Appropriate professional and institutional service is also an expectation.
This position is contingent upon available funds.

Minimum Education/Experience :

A Ph.D. in Planning or a related field is required. However, ABD candidates may be considered. Initial appointment will be at the probationary-term rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment.

Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability, or clear potential, to teach both face-to-face and distance learning courses in support of the planning curriculum, and evidence of potential for scholarly productivity and the ability to secure external funding. We especially encourage applications from scholars whose work addresses social, racial, or environmental justice and from candidates with quantitative and/or applied analytical skills.
