Description:

The Department of Psychiatry, Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and the Department of Psychiatry at St. Michael's Hospital are seeking to recruit a Psychiatrist-in-Chief. The successful candidate will have an academic position description of Clinician-Teacher (or Quality / Educator) and must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Effective start date will be April 1, 2023.

St. Michael’s Hospital is a leading academic health science centre, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. St. Michael’s Hospital along with St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Providence Healthcare forms Unity Health Toronto, a network of Catholic Healthcare institutions. Critical care and trauma, heart disease, neurosurgery, and care of the homeless are among some of the St. Michael’s recognized areas of expertise.

The Mental Health and Addictions Service at St. Michael’s Hospital provides a range of high quality integrated interprofessional mental health programs with a focus on services to disadvantaged people living with mental illness, addictions and other major life obstacles and contributing to the academic mission of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. These services include a dedicated Mental Health Emergency Services Area in the Emergency Department, a 33-bed inpatient psychiatric unit, and a complement of hospital-based and community mental health and substance use programs to match the needs of the community and to drive innovation and research. Outpatient programs include urgent care services, interdisciplinary programs for mental health and substance use disorders treatment and extensive group programming. The Medical Psychiatry and the Shared Care programs collaborate with medical and surgical disciplines and family medicine, respectively, to deliver embedded mental health care to patients in the clinics where they are already seen. Four specialized case management teams in the Community Mental Health division provide outreach mental health supports for over 400 patients, spanning first episode presentations to geriatric services. Innovative clinical care and research are being spearheaded by the Interventional Psychiatry program, which incorporates digital technologies, psychopharmacology and somatic treatments. The Centre for Depression and Suicide Studies is an active clinical and research program and multiple clinician scientists participate in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, a facility providing infrastructure and connections for research and education. There is a strong tradition in the integration of clinical, teaching and research excellence at St. Michael’s and faculty members are dedicated teachers for medical student and resident learners.

The successful applicant must hold an MD degree, be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the Province of Ontario. The position requires an outstanding leader with strong clinical, academic, administrative and interpersonal skills who as Chief will enhance the hospital’s quality of care agenda and actively promote academic development in the mental health field. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to faculty development, interprofessional practice and the promotion of partnerships, and will have established a strong academic track record.
