Position Summary:

The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide Housekeeping floor maintenance for university academic and administrative floor space that may include cleaning, stripping, waxing, buffing, carpet cleaning, etc.; perform physically demanding work including lifting and moving of heavy equipment, furniture, and supplies, etc.; perform housekeeping cleaning/disinfecting services as needed, respond to emergency calls and after hours calls as needed. Perform building unlock/locking service on Saturdays, Sundays and/or during the week as needed.

Normal 2nd shift working hours are 4:00pm to 12:30am, Monday through Friday including weekend work. The shift hours and schedule will be flexible and may change to include working on Saturdays and Sundays depending on workloads and Department needs. Schedule adjustments, weekend and holiday work, responding to after-hours, weekend and holiday emergencies as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:

-Must be reliable, dependable, perform physically demanding work, lift a minimum of 100 pounds, use 6-12 ft. ladders, stand for long periods of time while working and have some knowledge of standard procedures and practices in the care and maintenance of floors in a commercial or institutional setting; be skilled in the use of floor maintenance equipment and cleaning agents and have some knowledge of cleaning materials, methods and equipment.
-Must be able to operate, move and handle commercial housekeeping equipment that may include heavy floor maintenance equipment, water vacuums, carpet extractors, floor scrubbers/buffers, vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, pressure washers, auto-scrubbers, etc.-Must have reliable transportation and be able to report to work during a variety of weather conditions including rain, snow and ice. This position is designated as “Mandatory” during adverse/severe weather conditions and is expected to work according to University and Departmental guidelines.-Must be able to understand and follow oral instructions, directions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters; ability to read and comprehend labels, directions, instructions, etc. regarding cleaning, equipment and other work-related matters.-Must be able to develop and maintain effective relationships with others, work independently or on a team, with or without close supervision and communicate with and deal effectively with various groups, co-workers and customers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with 3 to 5 years of direct experience with the supervision and management of front-line staff in medium to large academic, institutional or commercial settings, preferably in a cleaning and/or maintenance environment. Previous knowledge of and experience with large building cleaning practices and use of industrial type cleaning equipment is also preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a high school education diploma or General Education Diplomas (GED). Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
