About the College/Unit/Department:

Located in vibrant and historic Athens, Georgia, UGA’s College of Environment and Design is home to the oldest landscape architecture program in the Southeast and one of the largest BLA programs in the U.S. The College houses accredited BLA and MLA programs, Master of Historic Preservation, Master of Urban Planning and Design and PhD programs. There is a wide range of research interests within its large and diverse faculty. The BLA and MLA programs within the College consistently rank among the top programs in the U.S. The College’s global presence includes regular programming at UGA’s campus in Cortona, Italy, and a strong working relationship with Nanjing Forestry University and Beijing Forestry University. Candidates for the Assistant Professor position(s) must have a professionally accredited MLA degree or an accredited BLA degree with a terminal degree in an allied design discipline.

Position Summary:

The CED seeks candidates with experience in teaching and research who will inspire students to analyze and synthesize complex environmental and cultural information to create compelling design solutions. The successful candidate(s) will teach courses in engineering, grading, construction, planting design, plant materials, and urban and/or community design. As the first chartered public institution in the US, The University of Georgia has a long history of local, state, and international engagement, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to this tradition. The successful candidate(s) must begin on August 1, 2023,

Additional Requirements:

An established record of relevant practice in design, planting design, construction (including contemporary and historic building materials), grading/drainage, planning, engineering, ecology, or plant materials is required.
Successful appointment as a tenure track Assistant Professor will require teaching up to 16 credit hours per academic year (Spring and Fall semesters) in one or more areas of expertise. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Candidates with prior professional, teaching and research history at the college level are preferred. Candidates holding registration or licensing as a landscape architect in the US, or other country with equivalent examination and practice requirements, and who demonstrate a record of accolades are also preferred. Additionally, an interest in historic preservation or urban planning and design is desired.

The successful candidate(s) will provide evidence of a strong record of practice, teaching, research, and service or the ability to excel in those areas. Evidence of research may include design awards, design commissions, peer-reviewed journal articles, or other refereed scholarship or recognition.

Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching, research, professional practice, and design background are highly recognized by their peers. Candidates must demonstrate an upward research strategy and capacity to attract external funding to support environmental design. Specific areas of expertise may relate to resiliency, sustainability, community design, wellness, landscape performance, land development and management, historic preservation, and urban planning.

  • Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in multiple facets of landscape architecture and be able to support teaching and research across the undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Successful candidates will have a deep passion for teaching and mentoring students. We seek candidates who will promote the highest standards of teaching and service. In particular, the CED seeks individuals who are great collaborators and are excited to engage in interdisciplinary scholarship across the university, state, and the nation as well as internationally.
  • Successful candidates may support service activities and CED labs such as the Sustainability and Landscape Performance Lab (SLaP Lab), the Cultural Landscape Lab (CLL), the Virtual Reality Lab, and the Center for Community Design & Preservation (CCDP).
