Systems Administration

Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Senior Database Administrator, Systems Administration, the Database Administrator implements and supports the institution’s activity related to selection, installation, configuration, maintenance and upgrades to enterprise and application databases as required.

  • Assists in the installation, configuration, maintenance and management of the institution’s administrative databases.
  • Communicates and ensures adherence to established regional database standards.
  • Maintains a current, leading-edge knowledge of emerging technology trends and practices in the areas of data warehousing, data mining, and data mart management.
  • Plans and implements backup procedures for production databases. Establishes and periodically updates security strategies related to database user authentication and authorization, guarding against internal and external intruders.
  • Assists in development and execution of related activities (data models, extract/test/load, etc.) and in the selection, installation and maintenance of related software and hardware.
  • Tracks, installs and upgrades database software. Performs daily testing, monitoring and database tuning.
  • Responsible for capacity planning.
  • Maintains database dictionaries. Conducts research on new data elements to prevent redundancy, and coordinates definition of data elements.
  • Coordinates systems integration, troubleshooting problems and performance issues.
  • Defines content and structure of the database and advises users on efficient techniques for extracting data.
  • Serves as a technical resource for programming staff on issues concerning the impact of applications on the database.
  • Installs, configures, maintains, upgrades, patches and tunes performance of Oracle Middleware.
  • Installs, configures, patches, upgrades and maintains Ellucian Banner ERP software.
  • Maintains multiple Banner instances.
  • Analyzes, tunes, and troubleshoots performance and space utilization.
  • Aids in the development of and ensures compliance with security procedures for monitoring and controlling access to the institutional Banner database.
  • Analyzes and responds to requests for changes to database architecture.
  • Migrates modifications made by developers to different environments.
  • Provides end user support when needed or requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Demonstrable Database Administrator experience may be exchanged for the Bachelor’s degree requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • Minimum of one year of experience with relational databases.
  • Strong demonstrable project management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment a must.
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Physical Demands:

  • Some lifting may be required on occasion (i.e. placing computers in racks, etc.).

Work Hours:

  • Occasional after hours/weekend/holiday work required.
