Sarah Lawrence College is home to two galleries: the Barbara Walters Gallery and The Gallery at Heimbold Visual Arts Center and Visual and Studio Arts program with 370-400 students. The Heimbold Visual Arts Center houses a woodshop, metal shop, darkroom, digital labs, painting and printmaking facilities. This is a 10-month part-time position working directly with the Visual & Studio Arts Services Manager, the Visual Resources Curator and the Associate Dean of the College on exhibitions in the College’s two gallery locations as well as administrative support for the Visual and Studio Arts program. The successful candidate would have professional level art installation experience, a background in the studio arts, excellent communication and design skills.
Exhibition Coordination: The Visual and Studio Arts program has numerous exhibitions throughout the building, 3 shows in The Gallery at Heimbold Visual Arts Center and an annual Open Studios event. The second gallery on campus, the Barbara Walters Gallery, has three exhibitions annually.

Essential Duties Summary:

Barbara Walters Gallery and The Gallery at Heimbold Visual Arts Center Responsibilities

  • Maintain the exhibition spaces – ensuring walls are prepped and ready for installation
  • Pick-up and return of artwork in the NYC area
  • Exhibition consultation, design, mock-ups
  • Frequent artist consultation
  • Installation/Deinstall/Lighting
  • Responsible for install/deinstall oversight with freelance installer
  • Management and purchasing of gallery supplies
  • Documenting work upon arrival and departure
  • Completing condition reports on incoming and outgoing work
  • Designing vinyl lettering, labels and wall text
  • Checklist drafting
  • Installation documentation for artists and publicity
  • Postcard, promotional media design and social media posting
  • Assisting with upload for virtual tours

Senior Studio CourseAssist senior studio course with solo exhibitions (spring) in the lower atrium. This includes:
  • Promotion on social media, organize poster copies and distribution
  • Organization and purchasing of installation supplies
  • Installation oversight
BUILDING Maintenance: The Studio Art and Gallery Coordinator in collaboration with the Visual Arts Services Manager would be responsible for overseeing public areas of the Heimbold Visual Arts Center proactively addressing any building maintenance.
  • Placing work orders for lighting, clean-up and facility needs with special attention and awareness of health and safety concerns.
  • Copy and mailroom; keeping all in working order, clean and stocked with necessary supplies and paperwork.
Administrative Programming Duties:
  • Assist with general use equipment and supplies
  • When needed cohost department wide events
  • Design promotional items in accordance with department and college design guidelines for exhibitions and program events (lectures, panels, screenings, critiques and workshops)
  • Large format printing of promotional materials
  • Collaborate on fall and spring open studios events, layout, promotional materials, exhibition, reception, equipment and installation needs for disciplines without technician support
Web and Social Media
  • Document class and gallery exhibitions for department archives and social media
  • Draft and schedule posts for the Visual Arts program, Gallery at Heimbold & Barbara Walters Gallery social media outlets
  • College website: Assist with preparing materials for the Visual and Studio Arts and Gallery
  • Program website: Updating of internal Visual Arts program wix site, developing exhibition platforms, maintaining faculty access pages and request forms

Required Qualifications:

  • BFA or BA with a concentration in studio art
  • Must have a strong knowledge of diverse studio art practices
  • Professional gallery and preparatory, handling and installation experience a must
  • Adobe Creative suite and design proficiency
  • Experience with digital camera, large format printing
  • Ability to solve problems with creative solutions
  • Invested in the arts and academic community
  • Strong communication skills
  • Woodshop experience a plus
  • Driver’s license required
  • Works collaboratively

Requirements for Employment:
