San José State University (SJSU) seeks an accomplished, dynamic and collaborative academic leader to serve as its next dean of the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business (LCoB).

Founded in 1857, San José State University is the oldest public institution of higher education on the West Coast, serving over 36,000 students as the only public four-year university in California’s Silicon Valley. It is one of the most diverse universities in the U.S. as well, with nearly 85% of its students self-reporting as students of color. It is also a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) as well as an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). In addition, SJSU is a top 200 public research university in the nation with record-breaking enrollment and an unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching, San José State University is poised to grow and innovate, strengthening its connection to the surrounding San José and Silicon Valley community. A new strategic plan—Transformation 2030—was released in the spring of 2019, laying the groundwork for the next 10 years of unparalleled growth.

The Lucas College and Graduate School of Business is the largest contributor of business graduates to Silicon Valley and a major contributor to what the Valley is today. With more than 175 faculty and 5,000 students, the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business reflects the vibrant, multicultural and global atmosphere of the region.

Reporting to the provost and senior vice president, the dean serves as the chief administrative officer of the college and is charged with aligning its vision with the strategic direction of the university. The dean will be responsible for overseeing the academic leadership, external relations and overall administration of the college. The dean will represent the college in forging strong relationships internally with university constituents and externally with donors, alumni and the Silicon Valley business community.

The incoming dean will be a visionary, engaged, relationship-oriented and collaborative leader with a demonstrated and deep commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, academic achievement, research excellence and amplifying the success of faculty, staff and students. Compelling candidates will have successful experience managing a complex academic unit. The incoming dean should have strong financial and budget acumen and a deep level of experience with curriculum review and implementation, fundraising and relationship-building both internally and externally. This is a unique opportunity for a forward-thinking leader with progressive responsibilities building and managing diverse, equitable teams who can envision the future, inspire the community and position the college to adapt and innovate in a changing environment.

The ideal candidate will have a distinguished scholarly reputation and a strong record of academic and teaching accomplishments commensurate with appointment as dean and professor, including an earned doctorate or terminal degree and a tenured appointment in a discipline appropriate to the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business. The candidate will provide evidence of success in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion and working effectively in a multicultural campus and community setting. San José State University is a major, comprehensive public university located in the center of San José and in the heart of Silicon Valley. SJSU is the oldest state university in California. Its distinctive character has been forged by its long history, by its location, and by its vision - a blend of the old and the new, of the traditional and the innovative. Among its most prized traditions is an uncompromising commitment to offer access to higher education to all persons who meet the criteria for admission, yielding a stimulating mix of age groups, cultures, and economic backgrounds for teaching, learning, and research. SJSU takes pride in and is firmly committed to teaching and learning, with a faculty that is active in scholarship, research, technological innovation, community service, and the arts.

In collaboration with nearby industries and communities, this faculty and staff is dedicated to achieving the University's mission as a responsive institution of the State of California.

To enrich the lives of its students, to transmit knowledge to its students along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of our society, and to expand the base of knowledge through research and scholarship.

Leadership at SJSU

Leadership at San Jose State is defined by a belief that shared decision making and collaborative university governance is at the core of our culture. With this inclusive approach as a guide, President Mohammad H. Qayoumi and the university's leadership promote discussion and engagement among faculty, staff, students and the community to shape and accomplish the goals of San Jose State.

California State University System

San Jose State is one of 23 campuses within the California State University System, the largest, the most diverse, and one of the most affordable university systems in the country.
