The Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) in the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University (The State University of New York at Binghamton) invites applications for two faculty members, at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level, starting in Fall 2023. The positions involve teaching at all levels from undergraduate courses to advanced graduate courses, and establishing theoretical and applied research in emerging areas in systems science.
All positions immediately above are sought to start in Fall 2023 and require advanced expertise in their fields per the description below. Qualified applicants in other emerging areas of the systems science discipline may be considered.
The Assistant Professor - Systems Science/Complex Systems/Network Science position will pursue newer topics such as Complex Systems, Network Science, Network Design, or other emerging topics in the broader discipline of Systems Science. Candidates with experience in the broad area of computational intelligence are preferred.
The Assistant Professor - Computational Social Science/Biomedical Complexity/Epidemiology position is also highly computational. In particular, complex systems science has been particularly successful in building actionable models in social, organizational, and biomedical complexity, which leverage ML/AI/Statistical Inference but add explainability to the management of complex problems. It is expected that candidates applying for this role will pursue much broader applications including, but not limited to, Social Science/Networks, Organizational Science/Networks and Design, Biology, Medicine, and Mental/Public Health Modeling.
All positions involve: teaching at all levels (undergraduate courses through advanced graduate courses); and establishing externally funded theoretical and applied research in the respective disciplines.
The ideal candidates must have (i) an earned doctorate in industrial engineering, systems science, or other related disciplines, (ii) excellent leadership skills, and (iii) superb records of research, including garnering funding and scholarly publications. Teaching experience is preferred.

Attracting $8.5-10 million annually in research funding from 2020-2022, our established faculty works collaboratively with over 30 sponsors from industry and federal agencies. At this level of research productivity, the SSIE Department is also ranked the highest on-campus in research expenditures. With an excellent and growing academic reputation, the SSIE Department is internationally renowned in areas such as systems science, health systems engineering, advanced data science/analytics, and electronics manufacturing/packaging and flexible electronics arenas, and health systems engineering, to name a few. The department has twenty-nine (29) faculty members and offers a BS degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), MS degrees in Systems Science (SS), Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), and Healthcare Systems Engineering (HSE), and PhD degrees in Systems Science (SS) and Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE). SSIE also offers a cutting-edge executive health systems program in Manhattan. With about 280 undergraduate, 210 masters, and 180 doctoral students, the department is growing in numbers and in reputation.
The successful candidate will have a tenure berth in Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering.
The candidate must have a doctoral degree in Systems Science, Complex Systems, Network Science, or a closely related field. The candidate should also have good leadership skills and should have an excellent record of scholarly publications. Teaching experience is also preferred.
The candidate is expected to have high potential to initiate and sustain an externally funded multi-disciplinary research program and to take a major role in advancing the research and academic mission of the SSIE Department.
The positions require advanced expertise and scholarship record in one of the following broad areas of:
- Systems Science/Complex Systems/Network Science
- Computational Social Science/Biomedical Complexity/Epidemiology
