Job Description:


The Department of Theatre at Binghamton University invites applications for a Tenure-track Instructor position in South Asian theatre history, drama, and performance to begin Fall 2023. The desired area of specialization will incorporate the teaching of South Asian drama and dance from both historical and practical perspectives, and will contribute to the department's efforts to more fully integrate a decolonized and global perspective into its offerings.


We seek a performer-scholar with an established background in South Asian drama and/or music (preferably with significant performing experience), and who demonstrates promise of an active research and publishing program in the field. Research focus on an underrepresented South Asian country is preferred. The ability to direct Western and non-Western productions and to teach playwriting is also welcomed. The successful candidate will teach survey courses in Asian theatre history as well as both academic and practical/performance courses in area of specialization.

Applicants should have a research agenda that will support and enhance the Theatre Department's offerings, by increasing its range and diversity of curriculum, with the goal of leading to successful tenure. Previous university-level teaching experience is preferred.



Requirements:


Required qualifications:


  • PhD in a relevant field must be held by the start of this appointment
  • Expertise in South Asian theatre history
  • Expertise in South Asian drama and/or dance
  • University and professional teaching experience
  • Ability to foster an inclusive learning environment

Preferred qualifications:


  • Professional performance experience
  • Expertise in some area(s) of South Asian music (examined degree, e.g. Visharad or Alankar, preferred)
  • Research focus on an underrepresented South Asian country
  • Expertise in directing and/or playwriting
  • Ability to teach Asian theatre history surveys

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
