Job Description Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant position is full time during the fall and spring semesters (81.25% FTE) and follows the University academic calendar. The work schedule is five shifts (a combination of weekdays and some weekend hours during the academic year).

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Assists medical staff with preparation, examination, and procedure, including performing patient history interviews to obtain personal data and chief complaints, documentation for records, and vital signs.

  • Provides patient care, referrals, and documentation in outpatient clinics.

  • Assists clinicians and administers treatments as prescribed by clinicians.

  • Administers medications topically, sublingually, orally, and by injection as prescribed by the clinician.

  • Conveys clinical information on behalf of the clinician.

  • Answers telephone, screens calls, takes messages, and provides information.

  • Performs lab and screening tests such as urinalysis, rapid strep tests, throat cultures, and COVID-19.

  • Assists in the lab as needed under the supervision of the lab director.

  • Front office responsibilities as assigned.

  • Collects blood specimens via capillary and venipuncture techniques.

  • Performs aseptic procedures such as wound care.

  • Provides care of patients in the observation unit, including observing, reporting, and documenting medical conditions, administering prescribed medications, and aiding with activities of daily living.

  • Sets up, cleans, restocks, and prepares exam rooms. Helps to maintain medical equipment.

  • Administers allergy injections as prescribed, reorders allergy serum, maintains treatment plans, and provides emergency assistance as ordered if needed.

  • Communicates with patients regarding health prevention, health practices and self-care.

  • Verifies compliance with state immunization requirements.

  • Maintains confidentiality.

  • Manages infection control using aseptic techniques, chemical disinfection, and correctly handling biohazardous materials.

  • Participates in other SHS staff planning, projects, and programs such as health promotion, surveys, and Division of Campus Life events.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assisting; AAMA or RMA certification required.

  • Current CPR/AED certification.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with multicultural populations.

  • Ability to observe and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.

  • Knowledge of specimen collection and testing.

  • Knowledge of procedures and standards for the administration of medication.

  • Positive attitude, maturity, professionalism, dedication, flexibility, and customer service skills required.

  • Ability to exercise skills in the area of initiative, problem-solving, decision-making, and multi-tasking.

  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.

  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and infection control standards.

  • Ability to make decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues. Maintain the privacy of the University and medical records.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with SHS staff.

  • Ability to gain competency with electronic medical record software.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Two years of experience working in Urgent Care Office, Primary Care Office or Emergency Room or equivalent education and related training.

  • Experience in a primary care outpatient setting.

  • Experience working with the college-age population, preferably at a campus health clinic.

  • Experience working in a CLIA laboratory is preferred.

Accountabilities:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assisting; AAMA or RMA certification required.

  • Complies with CLIA, OSHA, and other applicable standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Move about inside the office 60% of the time.

  • Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching to maintain spaces as needed (e.g., closets, under tables, desks, deliveries/packages).

  • Frequently operates a computer.

  • Occasional moving, pushing, pulling, and reaching overhead objects (i.e., furniture and equipment) weighing up to 25 pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Exposed to bloodborne pathogens 10% of the time.

  • Required to don proper PPE many times a day.
