The College of Education is also home to the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation.

Essential Job Duties:

The primary role of this position is to provide executive leadership and management for the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. As executive director, this position is responsible for the operation and success of the institute. The executive director sets the vision for the institute to help ensure its success, works to develop and manage the institute’s budget plan and operations, and oversees all aspects of organizational development and work of the institute.
As the Associate Dean for Translational Research in the College of Education, the position is also part of the College of Education Dean’s Cabinet and Leadership Team. This position supports the development and maintenance of collaborations between faculty in the College of Education and researchers and staff at the Friday Institute. Working with faculty and education researchers, the role of the Associate Dean is to connect the expertise of faculty in the college with the agile and translational work that takes place in the Friday Institute and vice-versa, supporting the connection of institute researchers with college faculty. The successful candidate will provide strategies and practices to expand and sustain the current success and operation of the Friday Institute and engage it as an integral part of the College of Education.
The Executive Director and Associate Dean is expected to have a positive public presence and to bring together education researchers, practitioners, and key stakeholders to collaborate on innovative solutions to educational grand challenges in North Carolina and beyond. The position provides an extraordinary opportunity for a forward-focused leader, with a creative and ambitious vision for educational improvement in a diverse society, to contribute to state and national innovation and translational research, connecting research, practice, and policy.
The Executive Director and Associate Dean will be expected to facilitate thought leadership, research and evaluation of innovative initiatives, and cross-sector collaboration among education, government, and private sectors to empower K-12 educators and their students to succeed in a rapidly changing world, contributing to North Carolina’s social and economic well-being. The Executive Director and Associate Dean will be expected to serve as an influential voice on education and diversity, equity and inclusion, and strengthen the state and national recognition of the Friday Institute as the go-to place for educational innovations and translational research, particularly in support of K-12 teaching and learning.
Executive Director

  • Lead all operations for the Friday Institute, assuring its success and financial viability.
  • Collaborate with the Friday Institute directors to seek out new partnerships and funding opportunities consistent with the mission and vision of the Friday Institute.
  • Ascertain that the work of the Friday Institute remains focused on its mission and vision.
  • Maintain a productive and collaborative work environment and support the overall organizational development of FI teams.
  • Work with the Friday Institute National Advisory Board to leverage their expertise and connections to strengthen and grow the work of the FI.
  • Lead annual reporting of all institute activities and periodic self-studies of institute effectiveness

Associate Dean
  • Develop and maintain collaborations between faculty in the College of Education and researchers and staff at the Friday Institute.
  • Provide guidance for faculty in the College of Education who are interested in translational research or other areas of interest that directly connect to the work and impact of the Friday Institute.
  • Provide active leadership as a member of the College of Education Dean’s Cabinet and Leadership Team.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise the Friday Institute human resource, business, and operation teams to assure smooth support of projects and events.
  • Provide mentoring, guidance, and evaluation of Friday Institute directors.

Other Responsibilities:

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral Degree in a field related to the work of the institute or equivalent experience.
  • Experience managing educational organizations or large groups that are primarily grant-funded.
  • Experience working in or with K-12 public schools and educational organizations

  • National reputation for advancing educational improvement as well as a track record of scholarly distinction, administrative success, and effective collaboration.
  • Successful experience leading or operating within an educational research institute or interdisciplinary center
  • Genuine commitment to the land-grant mission of NC State, the College of Education and the Friday Institute
  • Deep understanding of the educational research, teaching, and the policy horizon.
