Job Location:

About the Department:

Agriculture and the life sciences are undergoing a technological revolution with the adoption and use of artificial intelligence (AI). The availability of large amounts of data or “big data” surrounding agricultural production and the life sciences, that is increasingly heterogeneous, presents a challenge to traditional methods to process and estimate meaningful relationships critical to informed decision-making.

Essential Job Duties:

Building upon existing strengths in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and across the university, this position will provide AI expertise applied specifically to agriculture and/or life science systems.

We are seeking a candidate for a tenure-track position as a 9-month Assistant or Associate Professor (75% Research, 25% Teaching) that can provide expertise in the application of computational sciences such as AI, machine learning, computer vision, imaging systems, decision intelligence, and/or modeling to address integrated plant, animal, and/or food production, amidst resilience, climate change, and sustainability challenges. The successful candidate should be able to contribute to research and teaching activities in the areas of integrated plant, food, and/or animal production, climate change, and/or sustainability. Overall, the focus of the position should be practical and engaged in novel applications. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will teach an interdisciplinary undergraduate and/or graduate course on using AI and decision support systems, engage in multidisciplinary research efforts across CALS, other colleges, and especially with the Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI), Food-Animal Initiative (FAI), and provide a presence in AI at the national and international level as it relates to agricultural and life science systems. The successful candidate will serve as lead coordinator for other AI faculty within CALS. The search is open to candidates from any of the disciplines in the CALS with a background in AI and the tenure home department will be determined based on the credentials of the selected candidate within CALS. Affiliations and collaborations with other departments and colleges would be encouraged. This position may perform other duties assigned by the Department Head or the CALS Dean’s Office.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the potential to build a nationally-recognized competitive research and teaching program. Inclusiveness and diversity are integral to NC State’s commitment to excellence in research, engagement, and education. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience engaging with diversity through activities such as fostering an inclusive environment, working with students from diverse backgrounds, or incorporating diverse perspectives in research and teaching.
N.C. As such, you are expected to contribute to an environment that is welcoming of all groups.

NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
