About the Department:

The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University was founded in 1941 by Gertrude M. Cox and is one of the oldest and largest programs in the country. We are the “birthplace” of SAS Institute, the world’s largest privately owned software company, and one which specializes in statistical applications. The Department maintains a close relationship with SAS through student programs and other activities. The Department offers a diverse set of programs including Mathematical Statistics, Biomedical Statistics, Environmental Statistics, Industrial Statistics, and Statistical Genetics. It is unique among Statistics departments in that it houses graduate programs in both Statistics and Bioinformatics.

The Department has 40 primary faculty members, most of whom are housed in SAS Hall on the University’s main campus, and more than 260 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. The primary function of the Department is to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, consulting and collaborations on campus and world-wide, within a cohesive and diverse department, where all students, faculty, and staff receive fair and equitable treatment. The statistics graduate program is one of the largest in the country, with more than 150 graduate students. It attracts a diverse set of quality students from around the world. The undergraduate program is also one of largest in the country with more than 250 students. A number of students are transfers from other departments on campus. A significant proportion of our undergraduates enter graduate programs in statistics.

Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University seeks to hire multiple tenured/ tenure-track faculty for an August 2023 start and all ranks will be considered.

Responsibilities for this position include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, research, advising students, doctoral student research supervision and contributing to program development and scholarly activities in the department. Service to the Department, College, University, and profession are also a requirement.

The expectation is also to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, and collaborations on campus and world-wide, within a cohesive and diverse department, where all students, faculty, and staff receive fair and equitable treatment.

Applicants with interests and expertise in theoretical or methodological research in any area of statistics or biostatistics will be considered. Candidates with interests in data science, machine learning, and modern methods of data analysis more generally are encouraged to apply.
