About the Department:

Agriculture in today’s world is a business, whether it be processing and marketing agricultural products, farming, or supplying agricultural inputs. Consumers face a variety of choices that are impacted by policies and regulations, by micro and macro conditions affecting them, and by their individual circumstances and welfare. The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) addresses important issues regarding the management of agricultural and related businesses, the functioning of agricultural markets, the protection and use of resources, the performance of government policies affecting agricultural and related industries, and the impacts of decisions made by consumers with respect to the purchase of food and fiber products.

ARE offers undergraduate major and minor programs in agricultural business management and a concentration in biological sciences business management within the agricultural business management program. At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics, and Ph.D. degree in economics. These instructional programs are enriched by faculty members with extension and research activities which contribute to the relevance and thoroughness of the teaching program.

Essential Job Duties:

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) at North Carolina State University (NCSU) invites applications for the Hugh C. Kiger Professorship. This is a full-time, academic year (9-month) Associate or Full Professor position with a 40% research, 40% extension, and 20% teaching appointment. Potential applicants who are accomplished scholars with a proven track record of scholarship, outreach, and working with graduate students in the above-mentioned areas are encouraged to apply.

The Hugh C. Kiger endowment will provide financial support to the successful candidate programs, which shall include: (1) a research program of distinction in the field of agricultural economics with a focus on U.S. agricultural policy or international trade; (2) a complimentary research-based extension program in agricultural economics with a focus on U.S. agricultural policy or international trade; and (3) teach one class per year in the Department’s undergraduate or graduate program and advise graduate students.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • PhD in in agricultural economics, economics, or a related field, with a distinguished record that merits tenure in ARE.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • A research record of distinction of national and international recognition through peer-reviewed scholarly publications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability and willingness to develop an outstanding extension program, work with graduate students, and raise external funding.
  • Significant understanding of U.S. agriculture, economic organization of the agriculture and agribusiness sector, marketing arrangements (contracts), and a willingness to respond to crop issues, including tobacco, as well as issues important to the industries, stakeholders, policymakers, and citizens of North Carolina and the nation.
