Overview

Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is seeking to hire a half-time Assistant Chaplain for Christian Life. This position will contribute to the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (CRSL) mission, which values exploration of wholeness, belonging and purposeful living. The CRSL is part of Macalester Institutional Equity. This position will report to the Chaplain of the College. The Assistant Chaplain for Christian Life will articulate a vision and pathways to engage stakeholders that span global Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic traditions.This position is a spiritual teacher and guide for Macalester’s ethnically and culturally diverse Christian community, offering vision and implementation of offerings that align with the departmental mission. 

This position will serve as a member of a multifaith team; where collaboration and connection across worldviews core job responsibility. A successful candidate will engender support for Macalester’s community, which includes diversity of ability, age, class, gender identity, nationality, race, religion and sexual orientation. Macalester has roots and relationships in the Presbyterian Church and is home to a Chaplaincy that is Multifaith in expression and values.

The diverse chaplains of the CRSL seek to nurture growth into the fullness of the human family. This is possible when we co-create communities that support the inner life through reflection, practice, bearing witness, learning together, and building authentic relationships.

 

This is a part-time role (about 20 hours a week) and will include some evenings, weekends and holidays.

 

Responsibilities
  • Provide culturally appropriate religious leadership - in the Christian tradition - for Macalester’s diverse Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox, and otherwise affiliated communities.
  • Serve as a Chaplain and religious advisor to Christian students and parallel student groups.
  • Cultivate relationships that engender personal growth and develop student leadership.
  • Embody enthusiastic spiritual leadership and teaching. This will include thoughtful facilitation of dialogue, meaningful framing of religious, spiritual and philosophical issues, and the ability to hold space for students to explore multiple identities.
  • Provide vision, direction, and guidance for learning circles, book groups and retreats.
  • Build capacity for worship for a diverse, inclusive and multivocal progressive Christian community.
  • Provide opportunities for exploration of values, social justice commitments, colonial legacies, Christian privilege in the American landscape.
  • Amplify support for global Christian identities.
  • Provide budgetary management for Christian life at Macalester.
  • Cultivate local partnerships within congregations and Christian communities across the Twin Cities.
  • Serve as a Chaplain to the campus community, this includes students, staff, faculty and alumni  Commitment to pastoral confidentiality is required.  This position is designated as a confidential on campus resource (Title IX)
  • Creatively open pathways for inter/intra-religious and cultural dialogue on campus.
  • Prepare written and spoken teaching and remarks. 
  • Author departmental reports and assessment of programs and initiatives.
  • Articulate and reflect the values of the CRSL and Institutional Equity. 
  • Establish campus partnerships, serve on committees, and collaborate in a manner that positively influences campus culture.
Qualifications
  • Masters of Divinity (MDiv) or equivalent is required (completed or in progress).
  • Pastoral care training, preferably a minimum of one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Demonstrated skills in interfaith spiritual care for diverse populations (ethnic, racial, sexual, gender, cultural, religious, age, ability). 
  • Be conversant in the diverse religious, social, and cultural expressions of Christianity.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in public contexts and digital forums.
  • Appropriate understanding of boundaries and power in Chaplaincy.
  • Ability to design inclusive rituals, celebrations, and gatherings.
  • Ability to provide personal and group spiritual care and counsel.
  • Hold room for ambiguity, disagreement, non-resolution and suffering.
  • Must be available to work some nights, weekends, holidays, special events, and respond to after-hours emergencies.
  • Work in a collaborative and relational manner; balancing student needs and institutional priorities.
  • Evidence of and a commitment to interfaith education, universal design principles, anti-racism, and equity and justice.

 

Compensation & Benefits: 

This is a .5 half-time exempt position with a total compensation package that includes an annual salary of $26,000-$30,000 and Macalester’s generous benefits package
