Governors State University (University Park IL) is a minority-serving institution inviting applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor in Gender and Sexuality Studies, to begin in the Fall 2023 semester. This position is a 10-month contract with a teaching load of 21 credit hours (7 courses) in the fall and spring semesters; summer teaching is sometimes available, but not required.
We seek a teacher-scholar committed to enhancing our culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion and who will become the first full time faculty member in our Gender and Sexuality Studies baccalaureate and minor programs. The candidate will teach core and elective courses for Gender and Sexuality studies majors and minors such as Introduction to Gender & Sexuality Studies, Junior Seminar, GNSX Methods, and/or Senior Seminar, as well as courses specific to the applicant’s specialty. The ability to teach general education courses such as Interdisciplinary Humanities First Year Seminar and Mastering College and to contribute to cross-disciplinary programs such as Black Studies, Global Studies, or Political & Social Justice Studies is also preferred.
The Gender and Sexuality program at GSU is made up of affiliated faculty, we seek candidates who demonstrate an interest in collaboration with not only affiliated faculty, but other departments/programs, and the larger South Suburban Chicago community.
We seek candidates with outstanding teaching skills, evidence of (or potential for) a distinguished record of scholarship as well as service to the institution, discipline, and/or community.

GSU offers a wide variety of master’s programs and several applied doctoral degrees in health, counseling fields, and Interdisciplinary Leadership.

1. Ph.D. or terminal degree in Gender & Sexuality Studies, Women’s Studies, or a related field; ABD in the final stages of completion will also be considered.
2. Knowledge and ability to teach undergraduate courses in academic writing and gender and sexuality studies more broadly.
3. Documented record of an ability to make intellectual contributions through scholarly publications or presentations.4. Ability to complement the program’s strengths.

1. Experience teaching first-generation, returning adult, culturally diverse, and non-traditional students.2. Demonstrated ability to infuse course content with scholarship related to underrepresented and marginalized groups.3. Experience teaching courses in gender and sexuality studies, academic writing, career planning, or service learning.4. Ability to contribute to Global Studies, Political & Social Justice Studies, or other multi-disciplinary GSU programs.5. Evidence of teaching excellence.6. Teaching or professional experience in multiple fields/subfields.7. Bilingual language proficiency (Spanish or Arabic preferred).
