The Psychology Department at Western Carolina University (WCU) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant professor level, with a projected begin work date of either January 2023 or August 2023.
The successful candidate would join a department of 20 full-time faculty who are all passionate about teaching and involving students in research. Evidence of or potential for success in teaching core undergraduate and graduate psychology courses in biological psychology, human neuropsychology, and/or a closely related area (e.g., social- or behavioral neuroscience, psychopharmacology, biological and affective bases of behavior) is expected. The ability to teach other courses, such as general psychology or research methods, is desirable.
The typical teaching load is 3-3 (fall/spring). As a teacher scholar, the faculty member will maintain a program of meaningful disciplinary research that is engaging to both undergraduate and graduate students. For example, the department has a designated space for cognitive neuroscience that maintains a 64 channel BrainVision and 16 channel iWorx EEG systems in a shared lab space with a Tobii eye tracker and Pro glasses available. Current faculty have expertise in autism spectrum/neurodevelopmental disorders, early childhood socio-cognitive development, traumatic stress, human sexuality, personality, health psychology, and forensic psychology, to name a few. The department is home also to the McKee Assessment and Psychological Services Clinic, a state-of-the art, public-facing clinic providing advanced training for our graduate students through affordable comprehensive services to individuals and families in our community.
This is a very exciting time of development and growth in the Psychology Department at Western Carolina University (WCU). At the graduate level, we are home to an APA-accredited post-master’s Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Health Service Psychology (Combined Clinical-School) program, a scientist-practitioner oriented Master’s program in Clinical Psychology and a NASP/CAEP approved Specialist in School Psychology (SSP) graduate program. At the undergraduate level, the psychology major is WCU’s second largest major at over 500 students and growing. WCU offers faculty excellent internal funding opportunities to support scholarship and conference travel. Faculty are involved in service at the department, college, and university level, and engage in advising of our majors. Moreover, WCU is a 12,000-student regional comprehensive university in the University of North Carolina system, and we offer 115 undergraduate programs and more than 40 graduate programs. The campus is located in the picturesque Cullowhee valley between the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains, minutes from the town of Sylva, and midway between Charlotte and Atlanta. WCU is also 50 miles west of Asheville, NC, a city with vibrant art, entertainment, food, and culture scenes, and only 20 miles west of Waynesville, NC, the largest town in Western North Carolina with many options for dining, shopping, entertainment, and craft breweries.
