Executive Director, Enterprise Resource Planning

The George Mason University Information Technology Services department-located on the Fairfax, Va., campus- invites applications for the Executive Director, Enterprise Resource Planning. About the Position:

 The Executive Director, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), is a highly accountable and visible position and holds both leadership and management responsibilities is responsible for providing strategic technical leadership for the teams that support the ERP system and its components. This role ensures disciplined planning, coordination, direction, and design of the operational activities of ITS work on the ERP. The Executive Director acts as a change agent, communicating frequently with business units to remain aligned on strategy and ensure the systems support the finance, human resources, payroll, student, admissions, financial aid and procurement in an efficient manner while keeping data secure and managing risk. The Executive Director also coordinates with other Directors within Enterprise Applications to ensure collaboration within ITS, as well as consistency in the way we provide services to our customers. This position is responsible for continuous process improvement, adopting and aligning the work of the ERP team with functional units across the university.

Responsibilities:

This position provides oversight and direction to the Enterprise Resource Planning staff within Information Technology Services organization.

  • Direct the activities of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) teams within Enterprise Applications of ITS;
  • Provide strategic direction, guidance, leadership and supervision of staff;
  • Coordinate strategy for projects and operations with other ITS units including other Enterprise Applications groups to remain aligned on ITS and Mason goals;
  • Ensure the ERP teams adherence with security and audit requirements as indicated by ITS Security and Mason Internal Audit. Work with Mason units to understand and apply the appropriate level of security;
  • Directs the team that manages total lifecycle system and application support including problem resolution, operational continuity, software configuration issues and application development;
  • Sets standards for project and technology planning, technical documentation, policies, and procedures of the ERP group that align with the ITS PPMO;
  • Is a member of ITS Senior Leadership and coordinates with other ITS Senior Leaders on strategy and planning;
  • Participate in enterprise IT governance activities (PCS, ASRB, IT Security, etc.) to improve compliance and implementation of best practices across university;
  • Participate in evaluation, acquisition and administration of enterprise software, tools and services (RFP, SON, SOW etc.) for Mason that are vital to the success of university goals;
  • Directs the team working with business and academic units to evaluate technology initiatives and implement applications and systems to meet business needs. Also collaborates with Mason units to develop requirements for complete systems and applications as well as enhancements, striving for timely delivery while increasing efficiency and improving functionality;
  • Directs the DBA team to ensure maintenance of production and test Oracle databases in support of Banner ERP and associated systems including Workflow, Imaging, and document management;
  • Directs the DBA team for installation and administration of Ellucian Banner ERP, including Student, Financial Aid, Finance and Human Resources;
  • Directs the DBA team to maintain native Banner and LDAP, CAS and Shibboleth security for Banner and suite applications;
  • Writes performance reviews for direct report managers and has responsibility for reviewing staff performance reviews written by direct report managers; and
  • Attend conferences to keep up with relevant technology (e.g. ACCS, MABUG, Ellucian Live).

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in information systems, business administration or a related field; or any combination of education and experience equivalent to the advanced degree;
  • Substantial progressively responsible experience in a related technology or operations management role (typically 7+ years);
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic thinking and guidance to an organization;
  • Experience in higher education, demonstrated knowledge of higher education lifecycles (student, faculty/staff, and vendor);
  • Experience leading IT governance structures charged with managing project portfolios with the goal of promoting collaboration between IT groups and Mason functional and academic units;
  • Experience managing database administration, systems and applications administration and software development;
  • Extensive knowledge of the Banner SIS or other higher education ERP systems;
  • Demonstrated successful track record in IT project and personnel management;
  • Demonstrated experience in systems development and in depth knowledge of development methodologies;
  • Experience in IT operations management;
  • Experience in business process reengineering (BPR), process optimization;
  • Experience in leading and supervising technical and administrative staff;
  • Experience in scheduling and resource allocation;
  • Experience providing IT support within higher education;
  • Experience as a change agent; promoting the adoption of new ways of working with and in the ERP;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing; and
  • Diplomatic; able to handle competing interests; multitask; and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in information systems, business administration or a related field; and
  • Formal project management training.
