Job Summary: The Associate Director for the Law Library is responsible for assisting in the efficient operations of the Law Library.

Additional Department Summary: The Bounds Law Library at the University of Alabama School of Law seeks candidates for a new Associate Director for Public Services position. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Legal Information Services, the successful candidate will oversee and manage the daily operation of the law library’s public services department, including reference and access services. This supervisory position will also work collaboratively with the Associate Dean and others in the law library on strategic planning and the assessment of the law library’s programs, initiatives, and services, participate in collection development, and perform other duties and tasks essential to the law library’s mission.

Core Duties and Responsibilities: Oversees all law library public service initiatives to ensure a high-level of customer service; Regularly assesses and evaluates the effectiveness of department services, policies, and procedures to ensure adherence to library’s mission and internal and external standards; In coordination with the Associate Dean, assists with strategic planning and budgeting related to law library public services; Supervises two full-time reference librarians, one full-time staff member, and indirectly supervises student workers; Establishes and monitors library service desk schedules, procedures, and workflows; Coordinates and participates in the provision of expert faculty research support services, including the development of a faculty liaison program, provides leadership to the reference librarians, and directly provides legal, non-legal, and bibliographic reference support to the law library’s patron communities; As part of a team, designs, implements, and maintains content for formal and informal legal research instructional initiatives, including teaching in the first-year legal research program; Coordinates and supervises library marketing and outreach, including physical and digital signage, guides, and training materials; Collaborates to ensure library spaces and collections meet the needs of the law library’s patrons; Participates in collection development; Participates in relevant professional, scholarly, and service activities.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and three (3) years of public service library, archival, or instructional technology experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Law degree (J.D. or LL.B.) from an ABA approved law school and a master's degree (M.L.S., M.S. in L.S., etc.) from an ALA approved library science program. Three (3) years of public service library, archival, or instructional technology experience.

Skills and Knowledge: Strong commitment to service and dedication to supporting faculty scholarship and student learning. Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and meet deadlines. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to courteously interact with others in a diverse academic environment. Excellent analytical, problem solving, and oral and written communication skills, including evidence of teaching or public presentation experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Five (5) years of experience as a reference or public services librarian. Substantial knowledge and proficiency with legal research resources, tools, and technologies. Evidence of progressive promotion or supervisory experience.
