Job Title:

Assistant/Associate Professor

Job Summary:

Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure- track) position in the area of gerontology. The successful candidate will teach social policy and aging at the graduate and undergraduate level, perform research and secure continued external funding, advise students and provide service to the institution. The successful candidate is expected to contribute by doing applied research in partnership with state and federal agencies that provide health, long-term services, housing and social services to the older population.

The faculty in the Gerontology program are strong researchers with external funding in the areas of long-term services and supports, health, income maintenance, caregiving and families, intergenerational relationships, and intersectionality. Gerontology faculty have a close association with the Scripps Gerontology Center, which supports pre and post award administration.

Our teaching and research in gerontology contributes to Miami University’s mission in a unique way by helping to ensure that our University remains actively involved with state and federal decision makers who address the challenges and opportunities associated with an aging nation and an aging state--Ohio ranks sixth in the nation in the number of older residents. With one of the earliest master’s programs in gerontology in the nation, along with our well recognized doctoral program, the gerontology graduate programs have approximately 35 full-time students. Supporting the size and quality of our graduate programs requires active and engaged faculty members in both the teaching and research arenas. Miami has social policy courses and program evaluation courses that address health, long-term and social services, and income maintenance issues associated with an aging society and are required in the master’s program in gerontology. Miami and Scripps Gerontology Center researchers are widely known for state and national research that is directly relevant to decision makers. The Scripps Gerontology Center is celebrating its 100th year with a mission “to do work that makes a positive difference in the lives of aging individuals, their families and communities, and to meet the needs of aging societies.” Miami’s record of external funding with state, federal, and private foundations on applied policy and evaluation topics in aging has generated $20 million in external funding over the last three decades.

Minimum Qualifications:

Assistant Professor: Doctoral degree in gerontology or a closely related field (e.g., social work, sociology, public health, public policy) by the date of appointment, have an active research agenda; and ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level. Associate Professor: Doctoral degree in gerontology or a closely related field (e.g., social work, sociology, public health, public policy), have a record of external funding and publications, and the ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Desired Qualifications:

Consideration may be given to candidates with substantive expertise that complements existing strengths of faculty and Scripps Gerontology Center researchers; applied research experience; evidence of effective research collaboration; a strong record of external funding.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Submit a cover letter outlining research and teaching interests and experiences, curriculum vitae, and a one-page diversity statement addressing past and/or potential contributions to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service. Organization

Nationally recognized as one of the country's most outstanding undergraduate institutions, Miami University is a public university located in Oxford, Ohio (35 miles north of Cincinnati), with regional locations in Hamilton, Middletown, and West Chester, Ohio, and the John E. Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg. Miami combines a wide range of strong academic programs with the personal attention ordinarily found only at much smaller institutions. A liberal education core complements the more specialized studies of the majors.

Along with an impressive number of opportunities to gain practical, hands-on and immersive experiences, Miami is distinguished by a faculty who enjoy teaching and mentoring students. Recognized as a "Public Ivy" by Richard Moll in his 1985 book about America's flagship universities, Miami is consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s best schools for “unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.” This commitment to teaching is demonstrated in the University's record of exceptional retention and graduation rates-which are among highest for NCAA Division I schools. Miami also regularly ranks among the top public doctoral university in the country for study abroad participation by undergraduate students.

Chartered in 1809, Miami is the 10th oldest public university in the nation. Enrollment includes almost 15,000 undergraduates and more than 2,200 graduate students on the Oxford campus, which is lauded for its exceptional beauty. The charming, historic uptown area of Oxford is adjacent to the campus.

Miami offers bachelor degrees in over 100 areas of study and master's degrees in more than 50 areas; the University also offers a number of doctoral degrees.
