Job Summary

The Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music seeks an exceptional artist and teacher to serve as the next L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano at Columbus State University, Columbus, GA, to begin August, 2023. Appointment to this full time, ten-month position will carry the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track) or may be designated as Artist in Residence, depending on the academic qualifications of the appointee. The successful candidate will be a dedicated and talented pedagogue, a performer of keen insight and interest in a wide repertoire, and a collegial member of a faculty that values mutual support and student success.

The endowed Whiddon Chair in Piano at the Schwob School enjoys extraordinary support through:
  • The Jack and JoRhee Pezold Division of Keyboard Studies, the first fully endowed division within the school. Funding from the endowment supports scholarships and graduate assistantships in piano as well as studio activities
  • Funding within the chair account that supports professional activities of the artist and of the piano studio
  • A schedule that can accommodate some travel and concertizing during the school year
  • An All-Steinway School with 75 pianos, including both Hamburg and New York concert grands in Legacy Hall. They are maintained by a renowned piano technician

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:
  • Recruit maintain, and teach a full studio of piano students, including students pursuing undergraduate degrees, the Master of Music degree in performance, and the Artist Diploma
  • Build and maintain relationships with regional, national, and international professional organizations
  • Maintain an active performance schedule and appropriate creative activities as scholarship
  • Participate in department, university, and professional service
  • Teach other related music courses such as Chamber Music, Piano Literature, or Piano Pedagogy as assigned by the Director of the School of Music


Required Qualifications

Candidates should have a DMA degree in Piano, or related diploma credentials, or equivalent significant professional experience. The successful candidate will be a pianist recognized nationally and/or internationally as an artist and studio teacher who can demonstrate success in recruiting talented students.

Applicants must have the ability to meet Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements, in particular a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline. In cases of exceptional artistic merit, this requirement can be met by professional equivalencies.
