The Department of Music at Binghamton University (State University of New York) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music Theory, to commence in the Fall 2023 semester in a tenure-track position.  The successful candidate will be an accomplished and inspiring educator of graduate and undergraduate students, and will teach undergraduate major, graduate-level, and non-major courses that span Western classical and popular music. They will have research interests that include theory and analysis of contemporary and/or popular music, producing innovative work that is interdisciplinary, collaborative, and engages current critical discourses in music theory.

The Music Department has a strong commitment to hearing and amplifying the voices of those who have been historically excluded in musical practices and pedagogy. Members of historically excluded groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

This position is part of a multi-year cluster hire within Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, "Arts Practice, Performance, and Research in the 21st Century." This program aims to establish a network of artists and scholars who see their mission as foundational to an intellectually rigorous liberal arts education and who take an expansive approach to their creative activities, research programs, and pedagogy. The Binghamton University Music Department offers graduate and undergraduate degrees, including the Master of Music degree with emphasis in Collaborative Piano, Composition, Conducting, History & Literature, Instrumental Performance, and Vocal Performance; the Master of Music in Opera, the Bachelor of Music in Performance, and the Bachelor of Arts in Music. The department also serves students from all majors across the university as part of Harpur College of Arts and Sciences.


Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or ABD status in Music Theory or a related field at time of appointment
  • A record of university-level teaching experience in music theory
  • Experience and/or expertise sufficient to teach across a range of courses in Western classical and popular music
  • A coherent research program that includes theory and analysis of contemporary and/or popular music, with the potential to earn national or international recognition in the field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A completed PhD in Music Theory at time of appointment
  • A record of scholarly publication in music theory
  • A complementary creative engagement with music that will engage students with diverse backgrounds in music making
