Wayne State College is seeking an Assistant Director-Residence Life (Area Coordinator).
Nature of work:
Assist with supervision of residence halls and administration of residence life activities. Facilitate community development that enhances student success and growth. Responsible for overseeing residence hall occupancy, managing auxiliary services, supervising hall facilities and furnishings. May coordinate conference and guest housing, maintain financial records and prepare reports. Act as a primary point of contact for residential students. May specialize in one of the following areas: (1) Staff Recruitment and Selection, (2) Staff Training and Development, (3) Staff Programming, (4) Student Leadership Development or (5) Operations. May receive room and board at the residence hall as part of the employment package.
Examples of work performed:
1. Responsible for the supervision, leadership, and development of a comprehensive living-learning environment housing students
2. Assist in the overall direction and strategic planning of short and long term goals of the department
3. Creating a community development plan for the residential area focused on the learning, growth, and development of students
4. Supervise, train, evaluate and provide leadership to an undergraduate Resident Assistant staff of RA’s, Senior RA’s (Community Coordinators), and desk attendants. Potential supervision of a graduate student is possible.
5. Establish healthy mentoring relationships through daily interactions with students, mediate conflicts, respond to their needs and refer students to appropriate resources as needed
6. Participate in an on-call emergency duty rotation throughout the year (evenings and weekends), including academic breaks
7. Serve as a judicial officer for the College in handling student conduct
8. Coordinate day to day operations of the residential area and department such as occupancy, facilities management, hall opening and closing, room selection
9. Ensure the observance of all applicable rules and regulations as well as the Wayne State College code of conduct and Nebraska State College System board policies
10. Assist in the coordination of all department-wide initiatives including RA training, RA selection, room selection, and other programming initiatives and committees as needed
11. Manage efficient and accurate operational reports and communicate regularly with necessary offices
12. Develop a collaborative relationship with maintenance, custodial, campus security, student activities, and other offices as needed
13. Live in the Residence Hall as assigned
14. Provide support and direction for summer camps and conferences as directed
15. Facilitate and lead CHOICES alcohol education class for students.
16. Other duties as assigned that are pertinent to the goals and mission of the department and the college
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or related work experience
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in student development or related area
• 1-2 year of full-time Residence Life experience
• Ability to communicate effectively and work with various constituencies including fellow professionals, students, and parents in a student centered environment
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Ability to comfortably work and communicate effectively with word processing programs, spreadsheet programs, e-mail, and internet
• Individuals will be committed to personal growth, possess mature judgment, and be a skilled student development educator
• A commitment to educating in a residential environment
• Knowledge of student development theory and higher education ethical practices
• Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse student populations
