The Corning School of Ocean Studies at Maine Maritime Academy seeks applicants for a permanent, full-time, Assistant Professor of Coastal Geology or Geological Oceanography. Established in 1990, the Corning School offers hands-on, research-based curricula for undergraduates in ocean sciences. The department currently offers three programs: Oceanography, Marine Biology, and our newest program, Coastal and Marine Environmental Science, with each program offering students a dual major option in Small Vessel Operations. Situated on the Bagaduce River Estuary and Penobscot Bay, the Corning School of Ocean Studies connects students directly with the water. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace working with students in a classroom, field, or laboratory setting, including on a coastal research vessel, R/V Friendship. Candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence and a commitment to undergraduate education. The ideal candidate will have research experience in coastal geology, applied marine geology, or coastal marine management. Maine Maritime Academy is dedicated to building a diverse campus community and strongly encourages applications from underrepresented groups. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a coastal or marine-related science field by August 2023. This position commences in August 2023; review of applications will begin January 9, 2023.
Maine Maritime Academy has an eight-month academic year and faculty are expected to teach 24 units of lecture and laboratory courses each academic year. The successful candidate will teach students across all three Ocean Studies programs and will be a core faculty member within the Oceanography and Coastal and Marine Environmental Science programs. Teaching expectations include both introductory and upper-level courses that are lecture and/or lecture with laboratory courses. This may include Physical Geology, Geological Oceanography, Physical Oceanography, Coastal Resource Management, team teaching Introduction to Oceanography and Environmental Science, and/or other courses assigned by the Department Chair. Additional teaching responsibilities may include Preparation for Senior Research and Senior Research Project for Ocean Studies students, as well as lecture and laboratory sections of Introduction to Ocean Science for non-majors. The candidate may also teach courses and electives dependent on their area of expertise. Advising of undergraduates in independent research projects is expected and part of the teaching workload. Teaching responsibilities include preparing teaching materials, developing and administering student assessments, revising or designing new laboratory exercises, and practicing laboratory safety. The candidate will work with faculty in the Ocean Studies department, as well as in other departments across campus, to fully embrace continuous improvement of teaching, as well as integrate and evolve program curricula.
SERVICE, SCHOLARSHIP, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Maine Maritime Academy service includes, but is not limited to, service on Faculty Senate, Academy, departmental, and programmatic committees. Student advising outside of the classroom is expected; this includes advising students regarding academic, curricular, and career matters. Professional service can include application of academic and professional expertise to serve one’s profession, the community, the state, the nation, or the world. The successful candidate will develop and maintain scholarship in their area of expertise with research involving undergraduate students being highly valued. Continuous professional development in teaching as well as within the candidate’s area of expertise is expected.
OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE
Faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public. Faculty are reviewed by their peers, department chair, and Dean of Faculty periodically, and retention and promotion is based on the successful completion of teaching, service, scholarship, and professional development metrics.
- Develop and teach undergraduate-level lecture and laboratory courses in the Ocean Studies department with core faculty assignment to the Oceanography and Coastal and Marine Environmental Science programs. Develop learning materials, prepare assessments, and maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance.
- Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments and assessments.
- Advise students regarding their academic programs and progress.
- Assist in departmental academic and administrative functions, including serving on programmatic, departmental, and campus-wide committees.
- Participate in departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department.
- Maintain one’s own scholarship and professional development.
- Maintain an awareness and observation of chemical, fire, health, and safety regulations, including completion of annual training
- Experience developing and teaching undergraduate lecture- and laboratory-based courses. Facility with oceanographic instrumentation and field work in a teaching context. Commitment to high-quality teaching and the fostering of a positive learning environment for all students. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to supervise academic work by undergraduate students. Ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines. Ability to work collaboratively. Demonstrated integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and conditions.
- Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a coastal or marine-related field by the start of the appointment (August 2023).
- Preference will be given to candidates whose area of expertise includes coastal and marine geology or coastal marine management.
