Position Summary

Purpose

The Information Technology Professional will provide independent professional support of moderate complexity in the sphere of customer support, desktop computing systems administration, desktop software support, and hardware support.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides independent general (first level) diagnostic support to people at the laboratory for a broad range of technical areas, including IT associated with scientific computing, experimental devices, and machine controls. Resolves routine problems or questions and refers more complex issues to a more appropriate source
    Duties include, but are not limited to:
    o Helpdesk triage
    o Create, modify and delete users, contacts, email accounts, distribution lists, and other related items
    o Troubleshoot server connectivity
    o Configuration and monitoring of servers and storage devices
    o Coordinate and execute upgrades to network software and hardware
  • Coordinates laboratory computer, telephony, and printer deployments, updates, and upgrades
  • Maintains the inventory of physical IT assets, including computer and telephony hardware, E911 compliance
  • Trains and reviews the work of student staff members in areas related to their assigned projects, develops new staff procedures in technical areas of expertise, and provides related technical support to the team
  • Manages laboratory software licenses and ensures compliance with all licensing requirements
  • Independently works with people at the laboratory to analyze problems or needs, and develops solutions drawing on a high level of expertise in the position's assigned technical area to solve problems requiring novel uses of existing technology
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic Knowledge of TCP /IP, DNS, DHCP
  • Basic Knowledge of Windows, MacOS, Linux Distributions
  • Intermediate Knowledge of customer relations and service skills
  • Ability to research, design, and implement new opportunities and technologies in areas of responsibility that add value to the laboratory
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and deliver high-quality support to the team promptly
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years of college, technical, vocational or business school such as an Associates Degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed OR a Bachelors Degree in computer technology or information systems, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Technical knowledge of and experience with:
    o Apache Web Server
    o Imaging Linux Machines
    o Linux Hypervisor, Puppet, Git, SSH
    o Shell scripting, automation/scheduling concepts, hardware components and internals
    o Redhat and Debian Linux OS
  • Server build and configuration
