Position Summary

1855 Professorships being introduced at MSU were explicitly created to broaden the diversity of the community of scholars on campus. The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE), in cooperation with the College of Natural Science and the College of Engineering at Michigan State University, is proud to announce the Data Science 1855 Professorship, to be filled Fall 2023. CMSE seeks a leader in the field of methodological development for Data Science. Preference will be given to individuals who show a strong commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This is an open rank tenure track position. All areas of data science method development across STEM will be considered. Special consideration will be given to candidates with a background in method development for big data and its application including, but not limited to, environmental science, genomics, neuroscience, molecular biology, atmospheric science, astrophysics, plant biology, and image processing. This position may be jointly appointed with one other department across the College of Natural Science, with the specific choice of department dependent upon the candidate’s interest and expertise.

While we expect the appointment to be at the assistant professor level, depending on the experience of the candidate, an appointment at the level of associate or full professor will be considered.

Minimum Requirements

A Ph.D. is required prior to the start of employment, involving research experience focusing on data science. Post-doctoral experience is not required. The ability to communicate your research program beyond your discipline is essential.

  • Cover letter: Approximately one page that demonstrates the alignment of your work and experience in the context of the duties and qualifications of the position.
  • CV: Including a list of publications, accepted proposals for funding or other resources, contributed or invited presentations, teaching and mentoring experiences, leadership positions, contributions to the academic community, and public outreach efforts. Other professional information may also be included, as the applicant sees fit.
  • Research statement: A 4-5-page summary of research focus including the relevance of the research, research accomplishments, and future research plans. This statement should also describe past experiences with and future plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in research.
  • Teaching statement: A 1-2 page description of teaching and mentoring philosophy, experiences, goals, and plans to address these goals. This statement should also describe past experiences with and future plans to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and mentoring.
  • Referee information: The names and email contact information for four individuals who can provide reference letters. References will be contacted to solicit letters for candidates after they have been selected for a short list. At least one of the letters must specifically address the applicant’s ability to teach.

Department Statement

The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering was founded in 2015 and has steadily grown since then. CMSE focuses on the science of method development and its applications to cutting edge problems in both data science and scientific computing across all areas of STEM. Our goal is to enable high impact cross-disciplinary science throughout STEM as it pertains to understanding and modeling the world around us. CMSE currently has 34 faculty, the majority of whom have joint appointments in one of 13 partner departments across MSU. The department encourages interdisciplinary, collaborative research, the promotion of open science and methodology, and the use of computation to advance equity and racial justice in society. CMSE has a strong track record of mentoring and career development as evidenced by 14 early-career awards from the DoD, DoE, NSF, NIH, and the Sloan Foundation. We anticipate that future hiring in CMSE and its partner departments will emphasize both method development and applications relating to data science in a broad range of fields.
