The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Vermont (UVM) seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor position in Mathematics, with an expected start date no later than August 21, 2023.

The applicant must have an earned PhD in pure or applied mathematics (or a closely related area) by the time the position begins, a strong potential to conduct high-level and impactful research, the ability to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate mathematics courses, and the potential to supervise master’s and doctoral students. All areas of pure and applied mathematics will be considered; preference will be given to candidates whose research work connects to the department’s existing strengths. In addition to research and teaching, the applicant is expected to contribute to the missions of the department and university. A modest amount of service and academic advising is expected for this position.
UVM is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching, service and research, scholarship, or creative arts. We are an educationally purposeful community seeking to prepare students to be accountable leaders in a diverse and changing world. Members of the UVM community embrace and advance the values of Our Common Ground: Openness, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Innovation, and Justice. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the ideals of accessibility, inclusiveness, and academic excellence as reflected in the tenets of Our Common Ground. To that end, candidates must provide a diversity impact statement as part of the application detailing how they will further the diversity of the unit through their teaching and service at the University. UVM is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other category legally protected by federal or state law. The University of Vermont, established in 1791, is a comprehensive research university with a current enrollment of 12,000+ undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. The environments in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and throughout the UVM community are dynamic, highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary. Reflecting our innovative and collaborative spirit, our faculty actively collaborate in their teaching and research with faculty in other UVM Colleges and Schools; the UVM Medical Center also shares our campus. The University is located in Burlington, Vermont, and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shores of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York. Burlington, a city of 43,000 in a metropolitan area of 214,000, is often rated as one of the best small cities in America. Widely known for its music and food scene as well as its outdoor and adventure lifestyle (Outside Magazine and National Geographic), Burlington has also been hailed as a top technology hub (Forbes) and a city of the future (Business Insider). Furthermore, Burlington’s vibrant entrepreneurial and high-technology ecosystem has been recognized by the National Science Foundation’s US Ignite program, the national TechHire City network, and the Kauffman Foundation. While located in the idyllic rural state of Vermont, our frontier paradise is only a two-hour drive to Montreal and a four-hour drive to Boston. In addition, Burlington International Airport offers direct flights to numerous North American destinations.
Applications must be submitted online at www.mathjobs.org. Applicants should provide (1) a cover letter detailing how the required qualifications are met; (2) a current curriculum vitae; (3) a research statement detailing research interests and accomplishments; (4) a teaching statement detailing teaching experience and interests; (5) a statement describing how the applicant can promote diversity at the University through research, teaching, and service; and (6) at least three letters of reference, at least one of which must address teaching. Additionally, a minimal application with simple candidate information (no attachments) must be submitted at www.uvmjobs.com, position number 003178. Applications without each of these components will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by December 1, 2022. A background check will be conducted on each final candidate. The salary amount will be determined at a level appropriate to the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The University of Vermont’s hilltop campus looks out across one of America’s most vibrant small cities to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains beyond. Here, students’ educational experience and activities are enriched by our location — from the energy and innovation of Burlington to the forests, farms, and independent spirit of Vermont.

UVM is a Public Ivy and top 100 research university of a perfect size, large enough to offer a breadth of ideas, resources, and opportunities, yet small enough to enable close faculty-student mentorship. With a commitment to undergraduate education, UVM professors — world-class researchers, scholars, and artists — bring their discoveries into the classroom and their students into the field.

You’ll find UVM faculty and students studying the effects of climate change aboard the Melosira, a research vessel and floating lab; testing new vaccines at the on-campus medical center; launching local start-ups; and working with refugees at Burlington community centers.
