The University of Alabama at Birmingham Libraries is looking for a creative and technology-focused librarian to join our team as Emerging Technologies Librarian. The ideal candidate will be committed to fostering an environment that embraces innovative ideas and technologies that support the growing demand for technology integration in library services. As a member of the Emerging Technology and System Development Department, The Emerging Technologies Librarian will provide instruction and outreach for emerging and existing technologies in the UAB Libraries and collaborate with other members of the department to support technology-focused spaces and programming. They will play a leading role in sharing knowledge about the library’s four technology labs, technology-related activities, and services through workshops, consultations, outreach activities, and classroom instruction. The Emerging Technologies Librarian contributes to departmental projects as needed, proposes ideas for new projects and initiatives, carries out technology collection development activities, creates instructional materials to support in-person and online technology-related knowledge creation activities, and assists the Technology Labs Manager with basic operation of the Library’s Technology Labs as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Develop a thorough understanding of trends and developments in emerging technology topics, including 3D printing, internet-of-things, extended reality, digital humanities, and data visualization
  2. Achieve an elevated level of knowledge and skill related to the use of hardware and software for 3D printing and scanning, 360 video creation, products in the Adobe Creative Cloud, podcast creation, digital 3D models, data visualization, extended reality, internet-of-things, artificial intelligence, and machine learning
  3. Develop workshops, instruction, and programming to promote current technology-related library resources, spaces, and services; provide consultations and technical assistance to UAB students, faculty, and staff related to the use of emerging technologies
  4. Collaborate with the Technology Labs Manager to provide logistical support for four working labs and assist in developing technology-related training for students and staff working in the labs.
  5. Assist the Head of Emerging Technology and System Development in evaluating the UAB Libraries Technology Labs and aligning library technology activities and initiatives with the UAB and UAB Libraries strategic plan; contribute to documentation for best practices in the use of emerging technologies
  6. Perform collection development activities for library technology collections and collections of 3D printed models circulated by the UAB Libraries
  7. Contribute updates to library emerging technology digital communication channels including web, social media, and LibGuides

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library and information science or an international equivalent
  • Knowledge of emerging technology trends in libraries
  • Knowledge of information literacy and its relationship to technology and data literacy
  • Ability to learn new software, systems, and skills related to emerging technology
  • Excellent Oral and Written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively using both face-to-face and digital communication methods and platforms
  • Ability to function independently and as part of a team to reach desired goals and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of experience preparing and delivering workshops and programming focused on the use of emerging technologies in academic settings
  • Experience using 3D printing hardware and software
  • Experience using virtual reality headsets and other extended reality technologies
  • Knowledge of products from the Adobe Creative Cloud or experience developing educational activities related to Adobe products such as Photoshop, InDesign, Fresco, or Adobe Premier Pro.
  • Strong commitment to acquiring practical skills in using new technologies as they become available in the libraries
  • Knowledge of design thinking, methodologies for innovation, or the Maker movement.
  • Ability to contribute to the profession in the form of scholarly activities related to the use of technology within libraries
  • independent projects.
