The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Binghamton University seeks to hire a tenure-track instructor to fill the position of language coordinator. The language coordinator will direct elementary and intermediate language courses for Spanish, French, and Italian. The teaching load comprises two courses per semester, within the Spanish division of the department. This position requires that the candidate have a strong, proven record of excellence in language teaching at the university level and experience in leadership and teamwork.
Specific tasks for the role of coordinator include curricular development (preparation of course syllabi and calendars across sections), assessment of teaching materials and resources, professional training and evaluation (through pedagogical workshops and class observations), as well as advising students regarding placement at lower-level courses.
The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, with an interest in working closely with faculty, students, and staff. Experience in coordinating language courses and/or advising second language and/or heritage learners is preferred. The selected candidate should actively contribute to the University's mission of advancing a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through continued work and engagement with faculty, students, and staff. The position of Instructor refers to tenure-track teaching faculty who, upon receiving tenure, will have a continuing appointment at the university.
Candidates must hold a PhD in either Spanish, Italian, or French or an applicable field within Linguistics (e.g. Applied, or Educational). Given teaching responsibilities within the Spanish division of the department, applicants must have native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English; proficiency in another Romance language taught in the department is desirable, though not required. Though this position is focused on teaching and coordination (service), a candidate's research must demonstrate theory and/or practice that is directly transferable to the second language or heritage language classroom. The selected candidate should be prepared to teach Spanish courses at all levels of the curriculum, based on departmental need as well as area of expertise.
