30 parks and recreational facilities, and a growing arts scene. The Department of Psychology https://psychology.ecu.edu/ is one of 16 departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences https://thcas.ecu.edu/. The department has 30 full-time faculty members, over 800 undergraduate majors, master’s program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, a Specialist-level
program in School Psychology, and a doctoral program in Health Psychology. The Health Psychology program is composed of three separate training concentrations – Clinical Health Psychology, Occupational Health Psychology, and Pediatric School Psychology. Both the Clinical Health Psychology and Pediatric School concentrations are accredited by the American Psychological Association. The Department also participates in a multidisciplinary BA/BS program in Neuroscience and offers a graduate certificate in Quantitative Methods for the Social and Behavioral Sciences. Psychology faculty routinely receive College- and University-level teaching awards and are recognized nationally and internationally for their scholarship and professional
leadership. Faculty have recently received grants funded from Health Resources and Services Administration, Institute of Education Sciences, National Cancer Institute, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and National Science Foundation. The Health Psychology program is a current and past recipient of a Health Resources and Services Administration Graduate Psychology Education training grant. Finally, faculty routinely collaborate with colleagues throughout the Schools and Colleges of ECU and have established connections with the School of Dental Medicine, the College of Education, the Department of Criminal Justice, and various departments in the Brody School of Medicine, including Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Cardiology.

Job Duties :

The Department of Psychology at East Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in pediatric health psychology, beginning August 14, 2023. The successful applicant will develop an active research program with high potential to secure extramural funding, contribute to the doctoral concentrations in Pediatric School and Clinical Health Psychology, especially by mentoring graduate student research, and teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level courses.

The applicant’s program of research should be relevant to pediatric health psychology, such as the study of:

  • psychological aspects of chronic or acute illness,
  • health and well-being of youth at high risk for poor health outcomes,
  • academic, developmental, and behavioral needs frequently encountered in pediatric healthcare, or
  • methods for collaboration across health, education, and family systems to enhance coordination of care.

The teaching responsibilities for this position may include Advanced Developmental Psychology, pediatric-related graduate seminars, undergraduate Developmental Psychology, and other classes related to the candidate’s health-related specialty.

Minimum Education/Experience :

A PhD degree or equivalent in Clinical, Counseling, School, or Developmental Psychology or a closely related field is required; APA-accredited program required when applicable to degree. Candidates who have not yet had their degree conferred (i.e., ABD) may be considered. Candidates with Ph.D. conferred at the time of initial appointment will hold the probationary rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates will also be initially appointed with the probationary term rank of Assistant Professor and must have the terminal degree conferred prior to first reappointment. Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

The ideal candidate will have a clearly defined program of research in an area of pediatric health psychology, be a productive research scholar with high potential to attract extramural funding and be an excellent teacher and mentor to a diverse student population at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
