The Elaine Marieb College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst prepares students at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels to practice in a wide variety of healthcare settings and develops nursing leaders and researchers to educate future generations. Our faculty members draw on their advanced clinical skills and innovative research in their teaching to prepare students for their careers by using state-of-the-art technology and techniques. In Fall 2022 enrollment included 363 undergraduate and 195 graduate students. The College is committed to the inclusion of social determinants of health and social justice in our service, teaching, and scholarship.
The College of Engineering is ranked as the best public engineering college in New England. The Fall 2021 enrollment included 2,179 undergraduate and 662 graduate students. Research expenditures exceeded $60.5 M in the past year and the College is host to 15 research centers. The College has an excellent record of developing new faculty with 12 of our current faculty members receiving prestigious NSF CAREER awards in just the last three years.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time (9-month), tenure-track faculty that will be jointly appointed with the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing and the College of Engineering. This position will strengthen the collaboration between these colleges and will be part of the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation as well as part of the larger University-wide Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) and its Center for Personalized Health Monitoring (CPHM). In addition, the successful candidate is expected to take a leadership role in large, collaborative, sponsored research projects.
Individuals will be considered in all areas of basic/applied research in nursing and engineering who have an impact on the development of human factors, medical devices (e.g., bioelectronic systems, robotics, biomechanics, systems biology, bioinformatics, operations research), operations, or other related nursing and engineering research topics.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in nursing, engineering, or joint inter-professional courses, supervise graduate students, contribute significantly to the advance of engineering/nursing/healthcare applications, establish a vibrant, independent research program, and play an active role in the community and academic service activities in the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing and the College of Engineering as well as in the wider University.
Applicants must have an earned PhD in nursing or engineering with relevant medical experience and a focus on healthcare. The position is open to individuals with qualifications that allow them to be appointed at the rank of associate or full professor and may be a candidate for the Marieb Professorship. The successful candidate will have a stellar track record in research in nursing and engineering, including extramural funding, teaching, and leadership, as well as a commitment to diverse and cross-disciplinary academic and industrial collaborations. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an internationally recognized scholarly presence. Candidates will also be expected to teach existing undergraduate and graduate courses in our curriculum in relevant Nursing and Engineering courses in addition to developing courses that combine these areas of expertise. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The steps of the process are as follows:
- A minimally qualified pool is identified from the applicants, ideally by the end of January 2023.
- All remaining candidates are evaluated and a “long list” is identified, which will be interviewed via video conference. Candidates invited to these interviews will be emailed at least one week before the scheduled date.
- For candidates advancing to the long list: references will be contacted, and candidates will have an opportunity to submit 1 or 2 representative scholarly works.
- A “shortlist” is developed from the long list, and these candidates will be invited to interview on campus. - A teaching statement. Candidates should describe their past teaching experience and express their teaching vision for this position. Candidates are specifically asked to mention existing courses related to Nursing or Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management they are qualified to offer and also mention classes they are interested in developing. - A current curriculum vitae. The CV should be ordered as follows: 1) education, 2) employment, 3) awards and honors, 4) sponsored research (if any), 5) peer-reviewed publications, 6) service, and 7) other sections as considered appropriate by the candidate.
