The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College seeks applications for adjunct positions for the Spring 2023 Semester to teach VM131: Approaches to Media Studies, VM134: Histories of Media Histories and/or VM 200: Media Criticism. Spring 2023 semester dates are January 17-May 10, 2022. These courses are part of the foundations program in the Visual & Media Arts major. Descriptions and several sections being offered are indicated for each class below:

  • VM131: (January to May: MW 8-9:45 a.m. and/or T/Th 4-5:45 p.m.) Approaches to Media Studies: This course develops students’ critical thinking and writing skills about visual and media arts. Students will learn to analyze visual and media art from both formal and contextual perspectives and articulate relational connections across cultures and disciplines. Work in this course will help students identify and critique structural power imbalances, and hegemonic cultural values and media practices.
  • VM134 Media Histories (January to May: MW 8-9:45 a.m.; T/Th 8-9:45; and/or T/Th 6-7:45 p.m.): Students are given tools for thinking about historical changes from social, economic, political, technological, cultural and artistic perspectives. Whose history gets told? And why do certain historical narratives dominate at particular times? Students will develop the critical skills to examine different media histories from the 20th and 21st centuries and learn to become active agents in producing new histories.
  • VM 200: (January to May: MW 10-11:45 a.m. and/or T/Th 4-5:45 p.m.) Explores theoretical and critical approaches to the study of photography, film, television and video, audio, and digital culture. Theories and methods examine issues relating to production and authorship in the media arts, audience reception and effects, political ideology, ethics, aesthetics, cultural diversity, and schools of thought within the liberal arts. Extensive critical writing and reading in media criticism and theory.

The Department of Visual and Media Arts (VMA) is a vibrant and engaged community of artists, scholars, and professionals, with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 1600 undergraduate majors, and more than 100 MFA graduate students. The department offers general education courses in art history, a BA degree that includes tracks in either media studies or media production, a BFA in media production, an international BFA in Film Art with the Paris College of Art, a low-residency MFA in writing for film and television, and an MFA in film and media art. VMA also contributes to several interdepartmental programs.
