Information Security Engineer

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Florida’s only public university exclusively teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is looking for exceptional candidates to serve as the Information Security Engineer in the Division of Information Technology Services.

As part of the Information Security Office (ISO) workgroup, the Information Security Engineer will participate in the engineering, design, implementation, maintenance, analysis, and administration of Information Technology Services security operations, the latest tools, and techniques. The Information Security Engineer will also participate in establishing procedures and, wherever possible, automate routine day-to-day tasks to reduce operational overhead.

This position will make things more secure by protecting system boundaries, keeping computer systems and network devices hardened against attacks, and securing highly sensitive data. The Engineer will have a background in information security operations and network or systems engineering and will participate in projects.

JOB DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of security policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures to ensure ongoing maintenance of security

  • Participate in the assessment of compliance with security regulations such as NIST CSF, NIST SP 800, PCI, FERPA, and HIPAA. Respond to requests for information in support of internal and external audits and examinations.

  • Contribute to projects designed to advance state of the art in cybersecurity and are in line with the enterprise information security architecture.

  • Evaluate industry best practices relative to the university’s security requirements and emerging security technologies

  • Participate in mitigating security vulnerabilities and in information security risks assessment and management

  • Participate in monitoring, reporting critical activities, and providing security metrics to IT Security management.

  • Perform hands-on support for a wide range of security technologies and tools

  • Grow the knowledge and skills in cybersecurity and stay current on emerging trends and topics relevant to the team’s portfolio

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with cybersecurity standards (e.g. NIST CSF, NIST SP 800 series, etc.)

  • Knowledge of maturity model and capability measurement concepts

  • Subject matter expertise in the evaluation of cybersecurity controls and practices

  • Thorough understanding of the latest security principles, techniques, tools, and protocols

  • Experience with the evaluation of network architectures and defenses

  • Knowledge of cloud technologies and architecture

  • Knowledge of critical infrastructure protection concepts and standards

  • Experience in information technology operations

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, verbal and written communication and ability to work under pressure

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Network, System or Cyber Security for security technology projects.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field is preferred.

  • Experience as an Information Security Professional designing secure solutions in an environment comprising of systems handling confidential, personnel and proprietary information.

  • Previous experience working in an educational institution.

  • Certification: Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or equivalent experience

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF LAW:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

  • This position requires a criminal background check, which may include a Level II screening as required by Florida Statute §435.04.

  • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: This position is salary exempt. The normal work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., however, occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required. Travel between campus locations may be required. This position is eligible for hybrid work.

TARGET HIRING SALARY: $75,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience.
