SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The STEM Advisor is responsible for providing mentoring and academic counselling services in Math and Science content for students who are eligible for the Student Support Services grant. The position works collaboratively with the Director of the STEM Learning Lab and the Assistant Director of the STEM Learning Lab. Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention,and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of the STEM SSS student population.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists grant clients by initiating and implementing outreach programs and workshops to meet learning and developmental needs of students in math and science.
  • Develops individual counseling and study plans to aid with educationally disadvantaged students being served by the STEM Center.
  • Makes referrals to on-campus resources as needed.
  • Obtains midterm progress reports from instructors; reviews transcripts at the end of each semester for GPAs and course failures, withdrawals, and incomplete and provides needed academic advising to SSS eligible students.
  • Schedules meetings with participants in academic jeopardy and develops individual tutoring and study plans.
  • Works collaboratively with ARC Director to support SSS grant objectives.
  • Meets with SSS grant students to monitor and evaluate participation in ARC services and activities.
  • Monitors records documenting student progress and services provided.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned as by Director and Assistant Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Science, Business, Special / Developmental Education or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated (over three years) experience working with academic support centers or programs at an institution of higher education. Demonstrated experience in student advising.

OTHER: Commitment to and understanding of the need of academically disadvantaged students. Occasional regional and national travel. Job duties may require hours worked outside of established schedule.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Math, Science, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in learning support programs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of various learning, tutoring and instructional theories, strategies and practices.
  • Understanding of fundamentals of math and science subject matter at the higher education level.
  • Good supervisory, interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to work with various computerized tutorial programs in mathematics and science.
  • Ability to work with adaptive technology and individual educational plans.
