DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL) uses research and equity-minded practices to strengthen the culture of teaching, foster student success and equitable outcomes, and support teacher-leaders at UC Santa Cruz, a thriving Hispanic Serving Research Institution (HSRI). The CITL was established in 2016, and as a result of 2+ years of close collaborations with Online Education to serve our teaching community during the pandemic, the two units will soon be merging to form the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC).

JOB SUMMARY

The UC Santa Cruz Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (CITL) invites applications for an Education Specialist position with a focus on Graduate Student & Postdoc Development. Reporting to CITL's Associate Director for Graduate Programs and working collaboratively with colleagues in CITL and Online Education, the Education Specialist will develop and facilitate research-based, interactive programs, workshops, and resources on equity-minded teaching. The primary focus of the position will be on professional development programs for graduate students and postdocs across all disciplines, through the coordination, development, and facilitation of pedagogical programs, consultations, and resource-building. Beyond that primary focus, the position will also support programs, workshops, and resources for faculty, especially in their roles as mentors of graduate students. CITL is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to a culture of equity-mindedness and a strengths-based approach both to student learning and to serving our educator community.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $61,800 - $85,900 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

40% - DEVELOP PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS
  • Develops, facilitates, and assesses in-person and online programs and workshops on evidence-based teaching and professional development in teaching for a primary audience of graduate students and postdocs. Maintains strong working relationships with graduate student and postdoc groups through programming informed by the scholarship of teaching and learning. Coordinates programs, learning communities, and other cohort-building experiences centered in the teaching center.

20% - COLLABORATES
  • Collaborates with colleagues on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching center events, programs and services. Stays attuned to research, trends, and innovations in teaching and learning in in-person, hybrid, and online settings. Consults and collaborates with teaching center colleagues on projects and initiatives that integrate emerging trends and technologies.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to design and deliver faculty programs and workshops as needed, including but not limited to programs related to faculty mentorship of graduate students and postdocs.

15% - RESEARCH METHODS
  • Researches and shares evidence-based teaching and mentoring methods and strategies. Researches, translates, and disseminates instructional resources to educators in a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. Highlights pedagogical methods appropriate to a diverse student body. Researches, writes, and edits digital and print resource materials such as handouts, resource-sheets, and website content.

15% - CONDUCTS CONSULTATIONS
  • Conducts teaching and professional development consultations, primarily for graduate students and postdocs. Provides individualized support in effective teaching practices (e.g. course design, lesson-planning, and assessing student learning) and professional development (e.g. guidance on writing teaching statements and developing teaching portfolios). Provides one-on-one consultations, feedback on written materials, and classroom observations.

10% - WORKGROUPS AND OTHER DUTIES
  • Participates in university-wide, UC-wide, and external efforts to enhance teaching and learning. This includes serving as a teaching center liaison to campus partners, contributing to UC-wide projects through involvement in the UC Teaching & Learning Center Network, and participating in national discussions through involvement in the POD Network, AAC&U, and beyond. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Demonstrated teaching or mentoring skills, and experience teaching or mentoring at a college or university (this experience may include teaching as a Teaching Assistant or mentoring in a lab/field setting during graduate or postgraduate training).
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academic environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of equity-minded practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of teaching or delivering training programs in a college or university setting. 
  • Knowledge of effective pedagogies and best practices in higher-education teaching and mentoring. 
  • Facilitation skills in group settings such as classroom environments, group programs, workshops, trainings, or similar.
  • Strong communication skills and service-oriented approach to individuals at all levels and across disciplines.
  • Ability to conduct research and synthesize findings to communicate them and make them actionable for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues within and beyond the teaching center, and to contribute to a mission-driven, equity-minded team.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage projects, effectively manage time, and to maintain organization. 
  • Excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in any academic discipline, completed by time of appointment.
  • Experience providing consultations on teaching or mentoring to faculty, graduate students, or postdocs.
  • Experience developing and delivering workshops on teaching or mentoring for graduate students, postdocs, or faculty.
  • Experience teaching online or in a blended environment.
  • Experience working in or collaborating with a center for teaching and learning.
  • Well-developed research skills.
  • Familiarity with methods for assessing participant learning.
  • Experience applying research to curricular innovations and to professional development in teaching.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • The Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning supports faculty, graduate students, and postdocs working on the UC Santa Cruz campus. While some duties can be done remotely, other work, such as attending regular team meetings and facilitating workshops and programs, requires in-person engagement. A hybrid work schedule that includes weekly in-person and remote engagement will be an option for this position using the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
