The African American Studies Program and the Department of History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invite applications for a joint hire of an Assistant Professor. This is a continuing, non-tenure earning, nine-month appointment that will begin in August 2023. The successful candidate will teach in African American Studies and Public History and supervise the internship programs in both departments. The applicant should have a demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness and of mentoring undergraduate students, as well as experience with online instruction. Applicants should have experience building community relationships as the internship program requires coordination between UAB and local organizations. Candidates must have a PhD in African American Studies, History, or a related field at the time of appointment. Strong commitment to teaching and service is required.

 

With over 22,000 students and 2,200 full-time faculty members, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major teaching-research university in the state. Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching are prominent, and the program in African American Studies and the Department of History collaborate closely with multiple units across campus.
