Job Details

The Department of Music at Mount Holyoke College invites applications for a full-time lecturer position in Music Theory beginning July 1, 2023.

We are interested in innovative teacher-scholar-performers who engage in both creative and scholarly work and are committed to developing a vision for Mount Holyoke College's music theory curriculum in collaboration with other Music faculty members. The successful candidate will teach recurring courses in music theory and musicianship and will work with the department to expand the theory curriculum to encompass music traditions, idioms and practices beyond the European-American classical canon, incorporating areas such as global, vernacular, popular, jazz, and Indigenous music; contemporary sonic arts; etc.

Additional expertise in the area of keyboard performance, music technology, or any other area of music or interdisciplinary music studies would be an advantage. The teaching expectation is five courses per academic year, in a 3/2 course load.

Required Qualifications:

Terminal/Master’s degree or equivalent 

Teaching experience - college-level teaching experience related to the subjects listed above

Developing/promising creative and professional record

The Department:

The department's robust program comprises performance, theory, history, composition, ethnomusicology, and music technology (https://www.mtholyoke.edu/directory/departments-offices-centers/music). 

In line with curricular expectations of a liberal arts college, our courses are designed to help students make connections between theory and performance and understand how historical and cultural contexts shape musical styles and practices. The diversity of our course offerings is reflected in the scope of the musical traditions that we teach, including popular music, jazz, Western classical music, non-Western music traditions, and electronic and computer music. 

Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college with 2,200 students and 220 faculty. Over half the faculty are women; one-fourth are persons of color.
