Primary Purpose of Department:

In support of the University mission, the Office of International Programs strives to strengthen international education at the University as well as in the Charlotte community. On campus, OIP seeks to make international understanding and global awareness a fundamental part of the curriculum and an integral part of campus programming. OIP was established at UNC Charlotte in 1975 and resides in the Division of Academic Affairs.The Office of International Programs is a comprehensive international office, including operational areas for international student/scholar services, education abroad, English language training, short-term in-country custom programs, and campus-wide internationalization initiatives.

Primary Purpose of Position:

The Education Abroad Advisor performs duties in two primary functional areas: 1) advising on high impact practice of study abroad and 2) educational outreach.

The advising component entails advising students on aligning educational opportunities abroad with their academic degree plans. Specifically, the position advises students on UNC Charlotte exchange programs and affiliate program providers opportunities. This includes study abroad opportunities that support academic progress and degree progression as well as providing guidance through all phases of the study abroad process including initial program selection, application, pre-departure and returned phases.

The second functional area is educational outreach to UNC Charlotte students in support of unit and University global strategic planning initiatives. The Advisor supports all Education Abroad outreach initiatives and includes responsibility for initiating promotional and recruitment programs and collaborating on supporting under-represented students. UNC Charlotte sends approximately 800 – 1,000 students abroad each year.

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Education Abroad.


Summary of Position Responsibilities:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:
● Serve as the primary student advisor for study abroad opportunities available through the UNC Charlotte Education Abroad office● Develop and maintain an in-depth knowledge of all Education Abroad programs and opportunities, focused primarily on exchange opportunities and serving as the student liaison for affiliate provider programs.● Advise students on international opportunities abroad in areas of , academic, cultural, financial, and professional interests● Assist students with all stages of the study abroad process including inquiry, application procedures, acceptance, pre-departure procedures, and re-entry● Assist and support students while abroad and consult with the risk management team to address student concerns/issues● Assist with the maintenance and storage of student application records in consultation with the Assistant Director in the EA data management systems, which includes TDS and Banner● Develop and maintain a working knowledge of all applicable EA, University, State, Federal, and International rules, policies and laws governing UNC Charlotte student abroad programs (including financial aid, academic policies, Title IX policies, etc)● Participate and lead in the coordination and execution of EA programming including pre-departure orientation and re-entry events
● Serve as advisor/lead for the Study Abroad Ambassador program● In coordination with other EA staff, participate in discussions about outreach, marketing, and events pertaining to EA services and programs● Serve as the lead staff member to create, implement, and assess programming, outreach, marketing, and promotion of study abroad programs through: classroom presentations, study abroad fairs, print materials, electronic media/social media, campus events with various campus departments● Supervise an Education Abroad intern to assist with outreach events, marketing and the Study Abroad Ambassador program● Assist the Assistant Director with building and maintaining positive working relationships with various campus partners to further collaborative efforts (e.g., Colleges, Advisors, Registrar, Housing and Residence Life, Admissions, etc.)● Serve and participate in the coordination and implementation of Office of International Programs (OIP) events● Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education/Experience:

● Bachelor’s Degree● Ability to work well in groups, work independently and advise on confidential issues● Ability to manage software systems to streamline processes and communications● Must be detail oriented in working with databases, applications and advising students● Must have excellent communication, organizational and customer service skills● Strong presentation and public speaking skills● Ability to be flexible with other duties and special projects as assigned● Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and administrators with patience and diplomacy within a teamwork environment● Experience creating student centered communication plans● Experience working, living, and/or studying abroad● Administrative experience working in a collegiate setting

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

● Master’s Degree● Minimum of one to three years of professional experience working in a study abroad office● Experience working with student information systems such as TerraDotta or Banner● Comfortable using the standard suite of office productivity software including MS Office, Google Suite, Banner, web design management systems and data management systems● Experience working with and/or advising students● Familiarity with working in a university environment, ability to work effectively with faculty and administrators as well as connection with students and parents● Must be motivated, proactive, and independent in the completion of job duties
