As one of six departments in the College of Education, the Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment (ETRA) is a dynamic, innovative, and collegial community of socio-demographically and globally diverse faculty and students. ETRA faculty are productive and teach in a variety of modalities, which have contributed to high College of Education rankings for its online graduate programs from U.S. News & World Report.

Faculty members have the exciting opportunities to engage in collaborations with the NIU STEAM unit in the Division of Outreach and Regional Engagement, and participate in NIU’s transdisciplinary STEM initiative.

Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Colleges include business, education, engineering and engineering technology, law, liberal arts and sciences, health and human sciences, and visual and performing arts. On-campus enrollment is approximately 16,000 students. The university also offers more than 200 off-campus courses each semester to students in communities throughout northern Illinois.

The main campus is located in DeKalb, 65 miles west of Chicago’s “Loop” and 40 miles southeast of Rockford with education centers in Rockford and Naperville. DeKalb/Sycamore, with a population of about 60,000, is a modern paradox, a rural/urban community. It is simultaneously recognized for its manufacturing and rich farmlands. The site of the first manufacturing of barbed wire and the development of hybrid seed corn are evidence of its diversified history. The blend of industry and agriculture, coupled with the cultural and recreational facilities of the university and supplemented by easy access to Chicago and Rockford, provide an enjoyable environment in which to live.

Position Summary:

The Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment (ETRA) at Northern Illinois University seeks candidates for a tenure-track assistant-professor position with primary areas of expertise in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and learning analytics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

The department is seeking an assistant professor in our instructional technology program area. The position will involve:

  • Teaching introductory and advanced coursework in learning analytics, STEM education, and instructional technology for the department’s graduate and undergraduate programs, including the K-12 computer science and Technology Specialist endorsement programs.
  • Contributing to the areas of: scholarly productivity; expansion of curricular offerings in areas related to STEM education and/or learning analytics; student mentorship, advising, and dissertation direction; and university, college, and departmental committee service.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in learning analytics, learning sciences, instructional technology or related field by time of appointment (ABD considered with established defense date).
  • Prior experience or willingness to teaching using a range of delivery modes and formats (e.g., off-campus, online, blended, dynamically-scheduled).

Additional Requirements:

  • Evidence of capability to engage in and publish research and present at professional meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level;
  • Record of scholarly collaboration;
  • Capability to write grants to obtain external funding;
  • Skill in use of instructional technology for course delivery;
  • Experience and interest in student mentorship and K-12 or industry partnership activities.
